Soper is a member of the Labour Party, and was ranked 43rd on Labour's party list in the 2002 elections.
In the 2005 elections, Soper had hoped to contest the Invercargill seat, but was defeated in the nomination process by Wayne Harpur.
Her position on the 2005 list was forty-fifth, and she did not be return to parliament.

ACT Rural Affairs spokesman Gerry Eckhoff today called on Agriculture Minister Jim Sutton to confirm or deny whether Labour plans to compensate farmers for the theft of their property rights.
Mr Eckhoff was responding to comments by Labour list MP Lesley Soper at a Federated Farmers meeting in Southland last night, where she said the Government would consider compensating farmers if its land access legislation goes ahead.

During the meeting the National Party Representitive Rosemarie Thomas held up a number of Labour Electioneering items available on the information table outside and told everyone that they had been paid for by the taxpayer.
The person who got the best laugh out of the audience was Lesley Soper - She called Dr Michael Cullen a man of great economic prowess who is better than anyone else to manage the economy.
After the meeting I got talking to the 'Democrats for Social Credit' man who advised me that the privately owned banks in NZ should be kicked out and the Reserve Bank provide interest free loans for everyone.
