Topic: Leslie Halliwell

In the News (Sun 12 Feb 12)

Leslie Halliwell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born in Bolton, Lancashire, Halliwell was captivated by the films from an early age.
Halliwell's professional knowledge of the entire gamut of cinema is still seen in his encyclopedias The Filmgoers' Companion (first published 1965), Halliwell's Film Guide (first published 1977) and Halliwell's Television Companion (first published 1979 as Halliwell's Teleguide).
Halliwell died of cancer in a hospice in Esher, Surrey.

Upholding the outstanding tradition of Leslie Halliwell, editor John Walker delivers the breadth, detail, succinctness, knowledge, and wit that have always been the hallmarks of Halliwell's.
Halliwell's death in 1989 have paralleled what is more typically found in other popular reviewers, which, while mildly disappointing, still does not detract materially from the continuing power of the work.
Halliwell with a few warts is still far and away the best, given that the essential Halliwell remains.

This inaccurate and stingy bio of Truffaut in "Halliwell's Who's Who" should be compared with the detailed bio in Ephraim Katz' "The Film Encyclopedia," where approximately 1000 words are devoted to his biography in addition to the complete list of his films (with both the US and French titles).
Leslie Halliwell(1929-1989) was the publisher of this informative and extremely enjoyable reference book on many of the cinema's most influental figures.
Halliwell's book is also unique in that it includes a list of technical terms that are extremely vital in the motion picture industry, as well as a list of popular film series, and a complete list of Academy Award winners.

I doubted I would be interesting in purchasing this edition, since Halliwell hadn't had anything to do with the choosing of films that have been released since his death or the rating of them; but after fifteen minutes of perusal, I was a) convinced I wouldn't buy it, and b) peeved.
To quote Wayne (who Halliwell would almost certainly have detested), "Not." Halliwell did give better ratings to films quality films, particularly ones which were good entertainment to boot (he detested modern "message" films), but he never got out of the habit of making his rare kudos of current films have a backhand nature.
While all of these are complaints against the new edition, I think #3, the changing of Halliwell's old ratings by the new editor, is the *big* problem I have with this edition, and why I would recommend that you stay away from the 8th edition.

This inaccurate and stingy bio of Truffaut in "Halliwell's Who's Who" should be compared with the detailed bio in Ephraim Katz' "The Film Encyclopedia," where approximately 1000 words are devoted to his biography, not counting the complete film list with both the French and US titles.
There are about 120 pages of appendices in Halliwell, many of which are both useful and unique to "Halliwell's Who's Who." If you already own Ephraim Katz' "The Encyclopedia of Film" there is little reason to purchase "Halliwell's Who's Who in Film," except for some of the appendices, an expensive purchase.
For some film makers the biography in "Halliwell's" may be limited to two words, such as "American director." Eric Rohmer's bio is limited to a single dismissive and mildly insulting remark: "French director of rarefied conversation pieces." Robert Bresson fares little better.

Halliwell's is an excellent film reference book and it's format is particularly useful when compared to the other books on the market.
The only problem with Halliwell's is it's confusing star rating system in which most films don't have stars unless they are particularly note-worthy.
"Halliwell's Film, Video and DVD Guide" has a sound reputation, and to some extent its reviews are the most conservative insofar as they do achieve a balance which the other titles don't.

I have yet to find a single person who is sad that Leslie Halliwell is dead.
I was leafing through a newer one, and a lot of editing has been done, but based on the 1983 book he also had a knack for blowing twist endings for no...reason...at...ALL.
Halliwell also claimed that the film didn't do well at the box-office outside of the big cities; that only pretentious intellectuals liked it.

British television presenter and survival expert Ray Mears claims the 1965 Hollywood movie, The Heroes of Telemark, in which Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris blow up a German heavy water plant in Norway with a little help from their friends, was a pale imitation of the real achievement.
Some of this is purely show-off, a trailer for next week's final episode, in which Norwegian and British survivors describe the successful raid and their own survival techniques.
It works well enough and the scenery is handsome, but clips borrowed from the movie are as poor as Halliwell suggests.
