Paul Bernardo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bernardo's trial for the murders of French and Mahaffy took place in 1995, and included footage of the rapes that Bernardo and Homolka filmed themselves.
However, since the blindfold placed on Leslie Mahaffy had fallen off, resulting in Mahaffy seeing Bernardo's face, Homolka was concerned that Mahaffy may have recognized Bernardo, and hence Homolka herself.
Further, Bernardo claimed that Homolka's plan was to murder Mahaffy by injecting an air bubble into her bloodstream, eventually causing an embolism.

TORONTO (CP) _ An "agitated'' Paul Bernardo continues to insist it was his intention to set Ontario schoolgirl Leslie Mahaffy free and that Karla Homolka hatched a murder plot on her own, CBC's The National reported Tuesday.
Bernardo, who insisted at his trial that Homolka choked Mahaffy and Kristen French to death, is barred from speaking publicly about the case.
Homolka agreed to the 12-year sentence for her role in the rape, torture and death of French and Mahaffy, as well as that of her own 15-year-old sister Tammy.

She was also convicted in the 1990 death of her 15-year-old sister, Tammy, who died choking on her own vomit on Christmas Eve after Homolka held a drug-soaked cloth over her mouth while both she and her husband raped her.
In the following two years, the couple kidnapped and videotaped the rapes and beatings of 15-year-old Kristen, then 14-year-old Leslie, who was strangled by Bernardo with an electrical cord while the teenager held a teddy bear Homolka had given her for comfort.

 The Case Against Karla
We know that Homolka is the most notorious female inmate in the country and we know that, thanks to a plea bargain that gave her a 12-year sentence for manslaughter, her crimes have never undergone the scrutiny of a public trial.
What we don't have is a full accounting of her actions nor a sensible explanation for her involvement in the kidnapping and murder of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy and in the rape and mysterious death of her sister Tammy.
Under this arrangement, Homolka got 10 years for manslaughter in each of the French and Mahaffy cases, to be served concurrently, and another two years were tacked on for her sister's death.

In fact, if the modern teenager's use of "Duuuh" as a sort of catchall for really dumb behaviour, had been in vogue back then, surely Homolka would have answered her husband with it.
