Tom Starcevich was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) for his role in action at Beaufort on Brunei Bay.
Starcevich walked forward firing his Bren gun from the hip and assaulted two enemy machine-gun posts killing five of the enemy.

His citation stated: Private L Starcevich was a member of 2/43rd Australian Infantry Battalion during the capture of Beaufort, North Borneo.
Private Starcevich again advanced fearlessly firing his Bren gun from the hip and ignoring the hostile fire captured both posts single-handed, disposing of seven enemy.
Australia's representatives were headed by the Commander-in-Chief (General Sir Thomas Blamey) who afterwards quickly planned the arrangements for the surrender of Japanese forces in the areas where Australian troops had been fighting.

Starcevich earned her California teaching credential from California State University, Chico and also spent five years as a hospital marketing director.
In 2000, Howe won the Bross Prize, an award that is presented every 10 years for a distinguished unpublished manuscript that investigates the relationship between a discipline and the Christian religion.

Private Leslie Thomas STARCEVICH VC Beaufort, North Borneo, memorial erected by the government of the colony of North Borneo at the scene of the action where, on 1945-06-28, WX11519 Private Leslie Thomas STARCEVICH VC, of 2/43rd Australian Infantry Battalion earned the Victoria Cross.
Private STARCEVICH received his award for most conspicuous gallantry and extreme devotion to duty, when, under heavy enemy fire, be successfully destroyed four enemy machine gun posts sited on a thickly wooded spur and covering a single track leading to the enemy defences.
His daring efforts enabled his company to press home its attack, and also relieve pressure on another company attacking from another direction.
