  Stanislaw Lesniewski
Lesniewski was the son of one of the civil engineers chiefly responsible for the construction and supervision of the trans-Siberian railroad.
Although Lesniewski then definitely turned his back on philosophy in favour of logic--he later spoke of himself as a renegade from philosophy--his initial impression of mathematical logic was not at all favourable.
Lesniewski, after teaching for two years at a Warsaw Gymnasium and spending the war years in Moscow, followed his friend and colleague to Warsaw in 1919 as professor of the philosophy of mathematics.

Stanislaw Lesniewski Biography / Biography of Stanislaw Lesniewski World of Mathematics Biography
Lesniewski became an impassioned student of logic when he perceived that the antimonies (paradoxes) in mathematics and logic discussed in the book were a dire threat to the foundations of deductive science.
Lesniewski developed these separate yet complementary systems of logic using a precision and clarity that forever raised the bar for standards of mathematical rigor, as well as establishing the Warsaw school of logic as the world's most advanced.
Lesniewski was given a full professorship at the University of Warsaw in 1936, after which he spent several months of that year touring the scientific centers of Europe.

Lukasiewicz and Lesniewski on Contradiction - Dr Arianna Betti
Lesniewski refutes the synonymousness of OPC with (4) for the non-connotativity of ‘object’.
Lesniewski accepts the distinction between logical and ontological principles, but certainly for him there is not one between metaphysical and ontological ones: ontology and metaphysics are interchangeable names to speak of the system of the sentences about all the objects in general, where ‘object’ always stands for ‘existing object’.
Lesniewski was arguing that any ‘intensional function’ such as, for instance, ‘is possible that P’ had to be ‘de-intensionalized’ in order to be examined on the basis of extensional and bivalent logic, since he did not know any system of intensional logic that on his opinion was satisfactory.

 Stanislaw Lesniewski
Lesniewski expressed to Twardowski his desire to defend the dissertation in Lvov (see the Lesniewski's letter to Twardowski), but finally he did not succeed: in Warsaw, (July 2nd 1919), Twardowski announced on behalf of Wartenberg the latter's opposition to Lesniewski's habilitation (see the Twardowski's diaries).
On November 12th 1923 Lesniewski participated in the discussion of the lecture "Truth and Falsity of Definitions" presented by Kotarbinski and on December 8th 1924 in the discussion of the lecture by Lukasiewicz "On a Certain Way of Conceiving the Theory of Deduction".
Lesniewski's negative opinion regarding many-valued logic may be observed in his participation in the discussion on the lecture by Lukasiewicz "Genesis of Three-valued Logic" (1938), in which he strongly attacked Lukasiewicz's views.

Stanislaw Lesniewski and the Calculus of Names (Ontology)
Kotarbinski noted that Lesniewski "calls his system `ontology' in harmony with certain terms used earlier (as in the `ontological principle of contradiction')", and in strict relation to the Greek root of `ontology' as the participle of the verb `to be'.
Lesniewski's `ontology' is therefore "closely connected with traditional Aristotelian formal logic, of which it is an extension and an improvement, while on the other hand it is a terminal point in the attempt to construct a calculus of names in the area of logistic...
Lesniewski commented on Kotarbinski's remarks thus: "I used the name `ontology' to characterize the theory I was developing, without offence to my `linguistic instincts' because I was formulating in that theory a certain kind of `general principles of existence"' [FM, 374].

Lesniewski, whose doctoral supervisor was Kazimierz Twardowski, published the two papers A contribution to the analysis of existential propositions and An attempt at a proof of the ontological principle of contradiction while still undertaking his doctoral research.
Lesniewski's contributions to logic concentrate on the structure of a sentence, and he argues for the traditional idea of a sentence as consisting of a subject, an object and a copula.
Although Lesniewski played a considerable role during the period of development of modern mathematical logic and of the foundations of mathematics, his systems are not as well known as they deserve to be and the fact remains that his systems are not generally accepted as a tool in the foundational practice.

It seems that Lesniewski completed his mathematical education in Lvov, taking an interest in logical paradoxes, Schroeder's algebra of logic, the theory of relations and probability theory.
The diffidence towards mathematical logic, which Lesniewski encountered for the first time in Lukasiewicz's formal appendix to the book of 1910, disappeared in the years 1918-1923, when he learned to master the elements of the "Theory of Deduction".

Stanislaw Lesniewski's influence upon his sole doctoral student Alfred Tarski is generally speaking recognised.
My aim will be here to show that who takes on such an investigation must take into account not only the Lesniewski of the logical systems, but also the Lesniewski of the so-called 'prelogistic phase' (1911-13).
We have here in print evidence of the idea that it is necessary to sanitize ordinary language for scientific purposes, an idea which Lesniewski introduced - with a splendid metaphor (the "Porohy on the Dniepr") - twenty years before Tarski.

Lesniewski has claimed for a long time that philosophy is something which does not exist.
He says that while sciences were confused and not worth a damn, they were grouped under the name of 'philosophy' - and as soon as one of them improved, a special science was suddenly made of it, to indicate just physics, which came from philosophy.
Since, however, Lesniewski is being proposed as Extraordinary Professor of Philosophy of Mathematics, the question does not apply.

20th WCP: Do Sentences Have Identity?
At the practical level this criterion seems workable but if the notion of sentence is taken as a fundamental basis for logic and mathematics, it seems that this principle cannot be maintained without vicious circle.
This error can be removed by interpreting S as the set of all types of sentences (and not of sentences) and by modifying in an analogous manner the intuitive sense of other primitve concepts.
