Less Than Zero - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Less Than Zero is the first novel by Bret Easton Ellis, published in 1985.
Less Than Zero was loosely adapted into a movie in 1987 by 20th Century Fox.
While some believe that the movie's massive diversion from the novel was what killed it and that it was "all style and no substance", some applauded it saying that it hits hard, and Roger Ebert gave it a positive review, being one of the few major film critics to do so.

Written in clear, simple, matter-of-fact prose, Less Than Zero, is a chillingly disturbing and hair-raising novel that hones in specifically on L.A.'s edgy, filthy and unrepentant subculture, where booze, drugs, hustling, casual, empty sex, shallow values as well as violence-both physically and visually-are the norm.
Less Than Zero tells in vivid first person a journey through the underbelly of 1980's L.A. life from the passive point of view of Clay, a young man who finds himself facing the hard truths of adulthood.
Less Than Zero was a triumphant debut novel and one that has spellbound audiences for near two decades.

For me, the biggest problem with "Less Than Zero" is that whereaes "American Psycho" was an impassioned book that was not published untill 5 years after this one, "Less Than Zero" is a book that is as apathetic as it is overrated.
The problem with "Less Than Zero" is that even when the protagonist of the book, a bored teenager called Clay, is being excited by what is going on around him, which only amounts to snorting cocaine and having sex with his girlfriend Blair, the relish that came across in "American Psycho" is completely none existent.
Because many of the themes in "Less Than Zero" were reprised in a much more graphic and grander form in "American Psycho", "Less Than Zero" feels as if it is half finished, as if it was the original draft or template for "American Psycho".

Less Than Zero has style to burn — cinematographer Ed Lachman captures these characters' empty lives with shimmering lighting and steely blue filters, the gliding camerawork and clinically white set design creating a distant, emotionally cold tone.
True, their characters are less interesting than Julian or Rip, but it’s not hard to see why they were quickly eclipsed by Downey Jr and Spader in terms of roles and celebrity.
The Bret Easton Ellis adaptation Less Than Zero followed, but it would be another 13 years before Kanievska’s third film, Where The Money Is. A Different Loyalty, with Sharon Stone and Rupert Everett, was released in 2004.

Less Than Zero - Movie Review
The novel Less Than Zero is written in very short bursts, each of them an image that all sums up to a very complete collage of a nihilistic culture of LA's youth.
It is these two subplots that make up the whole of the movie Less than Zero, which paints the same picture that the book did but only in a very streamlined fashion.
The movie Less than Zero is populated with the brat pack members Andrew McCarthy, Robert Downey Jr., and James Spader as well as the pin-up girl Jami Gertz, who is surprisingly the only recognizable talent in the film -- the rest of the people just do a mediocre job.

As a nostalgia trip, Less Than Zero is quite an eyeful (just be careful that all the big hair doesn’t have your eye out!) But as cutting-edge drama, it’s become dulled with time and today is more of a curiosity that few of the film’s target age group today will relate to.

Less Than Zero Tolerance by Theodore Dalrymple
Zero tolerance of violent and aggressive patients in my city will mean only a special new clinic for such patients, complete with bars and unbreakable glass, where they will consult doctors in the presence of a security guard.
What is most significant is that so utterly feeble a response could be considered in Britain as “zero tolerance.” The danger is that when this feeble response is shown not to have worked, as surely it will not, it will give zero tolerance a bad name.
In Britain, then, zero tolerance is like Christianity in the opinion of G. Chesterton: it has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried.

His debut novel, Less Than Zero, captures an important piece of history--the lives of 1980's club kids.
The shock impact that the novel engendered when it was launched has largely faded - no one is surprised nowadays that wealthy American teenagers are into drugs, Less than Zero seems almost tame in comparison with contemporary perceptions of the scene.
Ellis found his voice early, and for this, Less than Zero is a noteworthy achievement.
