Small, loose colonies of lesser adjutant construct their nests in patches of tall trees that have a thick undergrowth of bamboo and are located on the edge of suitable wetlands.
Whilst the lesser adjutant is protected by law in all areas of India, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, and occurs in many protected areas, enforcement of this protection is weak.

A survey to determine the population status and distribution of Lesser Adjutant Leptoptilos javanicus in western lowland Nepal was carried out between 27 April and 10 June 2004, funded by an OBC small grant.
The potential area of Lesser Adjutant habitat was identified by direct observation and interviews with park staff, farmers and local people.
The wetlands of Kanchanpur District were found to hold a better population of Lesser Adjutant than elsewhere in the study area, so improved management of these wetlands, and regular monitoring of the species here, is recommended for its long-term survival in west Nepal.

From Hornbill, we were able to explore up to seven or eight kilometres further along the trail, past the hot spring and mud-volcano at Bulbulia, to a large area of bamboo (reaching c900m).
Along the edge of the lake were small groups of wintering Grey-headed Lapwings and further back, in the first trees, both Pallas's and Grey-headed Fish Eagles (both of which are common throughout the park).
On the way to Shillong we passed several impressive small colonies of Lesser Adjutant, also in large Bombax trees and, at a brief roadside tea stop had excellent views of another pair of Great Slaty Woodpeckers.

A pilot survey conducted on the waterfowls in Chatla Haor,a seasonal floodplain wetland of Cachar district in Assam, during the period from 1997-99, revealed large congregation of 20 different species of wading, swimming and diving birds during summer and monsoon months.
The wading birds (c 75%) recorded were Cattle egret, Large egret, Median egret, Little egret, Pond heron, Purple heron, Grey Heron, Chestnut bittern, Night heron, Lesser adjutant, Openbilled stork, Spotbill duck, White ibis, Water cock and White breasted water hen.
Among the swimming birds (c 15%), Lesser Whistling teal gathered in large numbers during the summer and monsoon months and were found to be less abundant during December to May The Lesser Whistling teal, were found to nest in the Eichhornia mats as well as in Nymphoides assemblages.

Birds are meant to fly freely, not to spend their remaining days waiting to succumb to death.
Plus, I'm not exactly sure which harrier I saw since the sun was shining behind where it was perched, but we sat and watched it pulling it's recently caught meal apart while perched in a ironwood tree.
