Plovers: Wildlife Notebook Series - Alaska Department of Fish and Game
Plovers are also known to use a technique called “foot-patting.” The bird patters its feet on loose sand or mud causing the small organisms on which it feeds to rise to the surface.
During the winter, all four plovers have the typical protective coloration of an animal that is preyed upon, that of a dark back and a light belly.
When the lesser golden plover is in flight, it appears all dark, unlike the fl-bellied plover which flashes dark and white.

Similarly Millington 1988 proposed ratios of 1.59 to 1 for Greater and 1.85 to 1.99 to 1 for Lesser.

In all plumages, Snowy Plovers are readily separated from Ringed and Semipalmated Plovers by lack of an obvious dark breast band.
It should be kept in mind however that juvenile Ringed/Semipalmated Plovers as well as some some basic plumaged adults show a broken band, although the remaining parts on the flanks are darker and broader than Snowy Plover.
Basic-plumaged and juvenile Chestnut-banded Plovers are paler and greyer.

 ID Issues
Separating Greater Charadrius leschenaultii and Lesser Sand Plovers Charadrius mongolus is far from simple, especially since the various subspecies of the two show some overlap in morphology.
On the primary bars, the Lesser's wing bar has parallel sides and is reasonably narrow, whereas the Greater's wingbar has unparallel sides and gets wider towards the wing tip, thus giving a far more prominent appearance.
Lesser's uppertail pattern generally appears uniform brown with maybe some small indications of a white edge to the tail.

The only problem is the leg projection, which seems to long for a Lesser, but the tail pattern, the widht of the wing bar in the hand, the bill, (columbinus gives a thinner-billed impression, although, in the subject bird, the head is slightly turned away from the observer) and the jizz of the bird.
