Lester Flatt (June 19, 1914 - May 11, 1979) was one of the pioneers of bluegrass music.
In 1948 he started a band with fellow Monroe alumnus Earl Scruggs, and for the next twenty years Flatt and Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys were one of the most successful bands in bluegrass.
Flatt was posthumously made an inaugural inductee into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor in 1991.

Flatt, who left school at the age of twelve and married at the age of seventeen, began his radio career in 1939 and worked in several bands, including that of Charlie Monroe and his Kentucky Partners, with whom, in 1943, he sang tenor and played guitar and mandolin.
Along with fiddler Chubby Wise and bassist Cedric Rainwater (real name: Howard Watts), Flatt and Scruggs played a crucial role in the development of the sound that later came to be known as “bluegrass”—a name taken from the band’s name.
The Flatt and Scruggs sound took its definitive form in 1955 with the addition of the Dobro resonator guitar of Buck “Uncle Josh” Graves.

Lester and Gladys Flatt moved to Burlington, North Carolina, in the fall of 1940, where Gladys worked for the huge Burlington Industries, and Lester joined veteran entertainer Clyde Moody on WBBB where he sang tenor to Moody and played mandolin with Moody’s band.

During the period covered by this boxed set, Flatt and Scruggs became the most commercially successful bluegrass of all time; at the same time, forces beyond their control were moving them inexorably toward a breakup that became more inevitable as time went on.
There is good Flatt and Scruggs music here, but as the the band's chronology draws to a close, there is less and less, and by 1969, when the band finalloy splits, the music on the albums they are producing is hardly recognizable as bluegrass -- but it isn't very good anything else, either.

Lester played guitar and sang what has been called “Bluegrass.” After working several years with Bill Monroe, he teamed up with banjo picking Earl Scruggs, and together they became a potent duo rivaling their previous mentor, Bill Monroe.
Lester Flatt became very ill in early 1979, spent time in the hospital, and expired May 11, 1979.

I have been a big fan of theirs for many years and want to preserve the history of the group as well as showcase their music.
SInce forming the Preservation Society several years ago, I have begun a quest to see a museum established to honor both Lester and Earl as well as a collective effort for them with the Foggy Mountain Boys.
