Horton was known to be charismatic and provocative in the classroom, always championing his students’ individuality and pushing them to their physical limits.

Horton trained a number of the mid-twentieth century's best-known modern dancers, including Alvin Ailey, Carmen de Lavallade, and Bella Lewitzky, as well as dance teacher James Truitte, Broadway dancer James Mitchell, and the gay activist Harry Hay.
Horton's dancers also frequently worked at clubs, including the Folies Bergère in New York and Earl Carroll's Theater-Restaurant in Los Angeles.

She joined the Lester Horton Dance Theater in 1949 and was a lead dancer from 1950 to 1954.
Horton believed in broad-based training, so de Lavallade was taught ballet, modern and ethnic dance forms, as well as painting, music, sculpting, acting (with Stella Adler), set design, costuming, and lighting.
The first of many roles Horton created for her was Salome in "The Face of Violence." It was when they were both with Horton that de Lavallade began her long association with Alvin Ailey.

I think that this video is excellent for dancers who have had some exposure to the lester horton technique.
The counts are hard to hear in the video, but by watching and listening to the music,it is very easy to catch on to the rhythm of the movement.
