Lester Keith Piggott (born 5 November 1935) was an English jockey, considered to be the best of his generation and one of the greatest flat jockeys of all time.
Piggott won his first race in 1948, aged 12 years, on a horse called The Chase at Haydock Park.
Known as the "housewives' favourite", Piggott had legions of followers and did much to expand the popularity of horse racing beyond its narrow, class-based origins.

Lester came from friends who gave me the choice of the litter of 3 kittens.
I got Lester on Derby Day in 1983 and vowed to name him after the winner of the main race, however I could not bring myself to stand at the back door in the evening calling "Tinoso" so he was named instead after the winning jockey, Lester Piggott.
Lady took immediate exception to Lester, jumping on him from behind and trying to bite his neck, not the sort of behaviour you would expect from a "lady".

It was one of Lester's ancestors, a Cannon of Stockbridge, who built the racecourse.
Piggott, who was champion jockey 11 times, liked riding Salisbury and had a good deal of success at the track, especially in the early years of his career, with his first course winner being on Alizarene over a mile in the Southern Handicap on July 6, 1950.
