DEL REY, Lester - personal data
Del Rey kept controversy attached to himself as though it were a shadow.
While he had limited success in writing for the SF pulps in the late 1930s and early 1940s, del Rey was able to land a job with the prestigious Scott Meredith literary agency in the late 40s.
Lester's marriages were several and unfortunate: the first two ended in divorce, his third wife, Evelyn, was killed in a car wreck (Jan 28, 1970), and his fourth marriage to Judy-Lynn Benjamin ended with her death in 1986.

 Lester del Rey
Lester del Rey was born in Saratoga, Minnesota in 1915 as Ramon Felipe San Juan Mario Silvio Enrico Smith Heathcourt-Brace Sierra y Alvarez-del Rey y de los Verdes.
Del Rey’s writing career started off, like a handful of other writers, when he became disgusted with the low quality of many of the science fiction stories published in his day and protested that even he could write a better story.
Judy-Lynn del Rey, an associate editor at Galaxy Science Fiction (a position she had taken over from del Rey), switched to Ballantine Books in 1973 (del Rey followed her) where she garnered increasing respect and attention as many of the books/authors under her charge rose to the bestseller list.

Disposable Lit: The Early Del Rey, Volume 2
To most readers of my generation, "Del Rey" isn't a person; it's the name of Ballantine's science fiction publishing arm, and if the name "Lester Del Rey" means anything, it's as the editor of said line, along with his wife.
Del Rey never did get called up (which may have been explained in Volume 1, which I don't have), but he did work in aircraft construction, and the wartime fervor invades almost every story.
The stories themselves are fair-to-middling; Del Rey, while a serviceable writer (and better than many of his contemporary contributors), seems like a slightly lesser version of Asimov, probably a result of the same tutoring from John W. Campbell which molded both their styles.

Virtual Marginalia: Review of del Rey, Lester
In my opinion, Lester del Rey is the most underrated (and under-read) founder of contemporary American science fiction.
He is far better known as an editor than as a writer, but his stories are creative and his writing is very tight, and he routinely combines politics with personal stories in ways that are insightful and entertaining.
The ending is satisfying although a bit abrupt, and like most SF authors of his era, Del Rey’s female characters are ill-defined and plastic.
