Let It Be (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Let It Be is the twelfth and final album by The Beatles, released on May 8, 1970 by the band's own Apple Records label.
Let It Be was later 're-produced' (some critics have said overproduced) by Phil Spector and, in 1970, it became The Beatles' final release.
After increasing use of overdubs and multi-layered recordings on recent albums, there was a general consensus to record the new album live in the studio, just as they had done for their first albums in the early 1960s.

Let It Be (especially the stringless "Long And Winding Road"), and even the lousy stuff serves as a fascinating illustration of the group's vast array of influences, their working methods in the studio, and, at worst, the roots of the band's disintegration.

The Long and Winding Road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spector wrought various changes on the songs that would be included on Let It Be, but his most dramatic embellishment would occur on April 1, 1970, when he turned his attention to "The Long and Winding Road." At Abbey Road studios, he recorded the orchestral and choir accompaniment for the song.
In 2003, the remaining Beatles and Yoko Ono released Let It Be...
The album included the master version of "The Long and Winding Road" recorded on January 31 closer to McCartney's original intention; with no strings or other added instrumentation beyond that which was played in the studio at the time.

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Reviews | Let It Be - no strings attached
As the last-released of the Beatles' 12 original UK albums, Let It Be holds a special fascination for many fans because of the bittersweet circumstances of its recording.
Let It Be may never be revered by some fans in the same breath as Abbey Road, Revolver or the White Album, but 33 years on it remains an iconic and enjoyable record.
This album would not be possible without the total approval of all 4 Beatles (or their estates), so Yoko must have approved it, George Harrison approved the project before he died, and Ringo has done nothing but enthuse about the end result.

“Let It Be” is now the final song on the album (where I’ve always felt it belonged) and, again, the beauty of the song is in the hands of the Beatles.

The basic the reason this album has had such mixed opinions and reactions ("cheap skate epitaph" as one reviewer put it in 1970), is because of the HUGE benchmark they lads set in the 8 years prior to it's release.

Let It Be bekommt oft nur schlechte Noten.
Sometimes I just think of "Let It Be" as the anti-Sgt. Pepper album, because whereas that classic Beatles album has a superb sense of construction from start to finish, the songs on this one seem to be arranged in a haphazard fashion (e.g., "Dig a Pony" followed by "Across the Universe").

All that said, the album is on the whole underrated, even discounting the fact that a substandard Beatles record is better than almost any other group's best work.
McCartney in particular offers several gems: the gospel-ish "Let It Be," which has some of his best lyrics; "Get Back," one of his hardest rockers; and the melodic "The Long and Winding Road," ruined by Spector's heavy-handed overdubs.
