Letter From an Unknown Woman (1948)
Letter From an Unknown Woman (1948) is the classic romantic film - a lush tearjerker par excellence - of the bittersweet theme of unrequited, lost love (it's considered a quintessential "woman's picture").
The view blurs and fades, signifying a flashback (for virtually the remainder of the film) from the unknown woman's written deathbed confession, as she tells of her lifelong, almost 20 year obsession with a pianist and actually relives the feelings and thoughts of her life.
The reading of the letter is represented by the narrating voice of the woman herself - now dead, although her voice doesn't sound labored or deathly sick.

Intently listening to Letter from an Unknown Woman (Max Ophuls, 1953) is like watching the film for the first time: being surprised again by its fluidity and getting caught up in the smooth progression of the story, guided by the music.
This sequence verges on comedy: it is accompanied by an awkward rendition of a Wagner tune by a military brass band.
Letter constantly challenges the viewer to dismiss easy interpretations: contradictory emotions coexist, and both protagonists are portrayed with a large amount of ambiguity.

Moral perfection is an unbreached rationality—not the degree of your intelligence, but the full and relentless use of your mind, not the extent of your knowledge, but the acceptance of reason as an absolute.
An error of knowledge is not a moral flaw, provided you are willing to correct it; only a mystic would judge human beings by the standard of an impossible, automatic omniscience.

Opening with consummate gentleman Stefan Brand (Louis Jourdan) arriving home after a very late night's socialising with a duel to fight the next morning, our anti-hero finds a letter has been left for him by an unknown woman detailing her life and how it has all revolved around her love for him.
Somewhat reminiscent of Kind Hearts & Coronets, the film continues through flashback with the unknown woman, played by Joan Fontaine, narrating the story until we arrive back at the film's present.
Though the final resolving of the story is perhaps over redemptive (and not a little over-the-top), Letter From an Unknown Woman remains a beautifully shot and involving tragic classic.

"unknown" Lisa to Louis Jourdan's flippant Stefan begins a series of flashbacks recounting her all-consuming love for him and his inability to remember her, even after he seduced her once and impregnated her.
Ophüls's fluid shooting style communicates the passion that Lisa cannot articulate until it is too late, with lyrical camera movements that linger over Lisa's fascination with anything related to her one night with Stefan and evocative shots of the curved staircase leading to Stefan's apartment.
Though it was not initially a success, the gracefully romantic Letter From an Unknown Woman has since come to be considered Ophüls's best American film.

Based on Stephen Zweig's Vienna-set story that was famously adapted to the screen in 1948 by Max Ophuls, the sumptuously lensed Chinese costumer "Letter From an Unknown Woman" has many of the same problems a remake of "Citizen Kane" would have for fans of the original.
Structured as a series of flashbacks, story opens in 1948 Peking when a middle-aged man (top star Jiang Wen) receives an anonymous letter that begins, "My son died yesterday." A poignant female voice, which recurs throughout the film, reads the lines written by a woman who has loved this man in silence all her life.
