		Letting Off the Happiness was the music world's introduction to Conor Oberst, a hot-headed 17 year old kid who would eventually go on to record 2002's Lifted, or, The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground, which turned him into the star he is today.
		Most of the album was recorded during a session on new year's eve of 97/98, and Oberst intejects between several of the tracks, giving commentary on the progression of the evening, including updates on the number of hours remaining until midnight.
		Perhaps its biggest weakness is that Letting Off the Happiness reveals that in 1998, Conor Oberst had not yet learned, as a vocalist, how to scream.

		It was recorded before Oberst was even out of his teens, but he shows the maturity of a songwriter who has seen it all, and for that he deserves respect and maybe a bit of incredulous inspection.

		Conor Oberst thrills again with his early release "letting off the Happiness", a wonderful blending of his signature mope-rock style and digital anthems such as those on his later release "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn".
		The album starts off (as always) with a collage of random static and noises, that fades into a song - "If Winter Ends" (5/5) a fast major-keyed guitar spree filled with suicidal lyrics, but happy vocals - for the most part of the song.
		We continue as the fastest-paced song so far on the album, "The City Has Sex" (5/5) is possibly the only song on Conor's discography that he has let somebody else sing without singing in the background - or foreground, for that matter.
