Leucistic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Leucistic animals lack all colour in their skin, fur, or feathers; but generally have normally coloured eyes.
While albinism results in an animal lacking the normal melanin (and occasionally other) pigment cells, leucistic animals retain the cells; but lack an enzyme needed to activate the pigment.
Another key difference is that leucisim can also be localized and incomplete, affecting only part of the animal (whereas albinism, anerythrism, and axanthism always affects the entire animal); with irregular patches of white on an animal that otherwise has normal colouring and patterning.

 The White kite
Leucistic means that the colouration is mainly pure white and not the usual reds and fls of a 'normal' kite.
This Leucistic individual is mainly white, and has blue eyes - not to be confused for Albino which means the lack of colouring evidenced by pink eyes.
Leucistic birds are at a major disadvantage as their light colour attracts the unwanted attentions of both red kites and corvids who rob and generally harangue the unfortunate bird purely because it is different.

Leucistic leopard geckos are normal leopard geckos (Eublepharis Macularius) that are carrying a mutant gene which removes alt spots from the adult gecko., The babies are born with a disruptive brown pattern on a yellow/white background.
Since the leucistic mutation is recessive (as in amelanism in Corn Snakes), breeding a leucistic leopard gecko with a normal leopard gecko will produce heterozygous babies i.e.
If these babies are then bred back to a leucistic, 50% of the resultant offspring will be leucistic and 50% will be hets; a single male leucistic could breed with up to 12 females in a season.

During this same season, to my amazement, we had accidentally produced a bright yellow colored Blizzard Lizard X Patternless (leucistic) Gecko, which showed both the traits from of the Blizzard Lizard and the Patternless (leucistic) from the original colony.
This genetic cross carries the genes from the original white female, which was bred to a Patternless (leucistic) male.

Abnormally Plumaged Birds in a Stanington Garden
One from BBC Wildlife states that because white feathers lack melanin they are more palatable to Malophaga feather lice and therefore often have higher infestations this adds to the problem of the obvious higher visability to predators.
The second says that there are 4 types of melanins that give birds their colouration, with fl and browns the most common, these are often paired with carotenoids (reds and yellows). Because carotenoids are responsible for reds and yellows some leucistic birds retain reds and yellows whilst losing fl and brown colouration.
The leucistic Dunnock was in the garden again on 7th August 2001 after a long absence.

Defining and classifying Fallows by Terry Martin
Leucistic mutations correlate to mutant alleles of loci that control melanocyte life functions, in particular migration of melanoblasts (melanocyte precursors) from the neural crest in the embryo.
The hallmark of leucistic colour morphs is that melanin is either totally absent or fully retained.
But if we eliminate those with leucistic or dilution traits, we are finally left with a smaller group of albinistic colour morphs that include the fallow phenotypes.

What is being called Leucistic in bearded dragons is not leucistic (true leucistics do not "grow out of" a pattern or colour and become white, they are white from day 1) and it is not a proven recessive.
They're not leucistic, which is why they were renamed "Patternless" (although some still call them leucistic).
Blizzards are about the closest thing to a Leucistic in leopard geckos, but again, as the name had already been incorrectly used, and blizzards do display colour as a baby (even though as adults they can be pure white) they didn't/couldn't apply the name leucistic correctly.
