The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Catholic University of Leuven in English - also the translated name of its French-speaking sister university) or K.U. Leuven is a Flemish university, located in the town of Leuven in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking (northern) region of Belgium.
The K.U. Leuven is dedicated to Saint Mary, the mother of God, and organises an annual celebration on February 2nd in her honor.
The Dutch University of Leuven remained in the city of Leuven, while the French speaking Université Catholique de Louvain moved to the newly built campus of Louvain-la-Neuve, south of the linguistic border dividing Belgium (there is about a forty-five minute drive between the two universities).

The Catholic University of Leuven was founded in 1425 by Pope Martin V. It is one of the oldest university in the world (the oldest catholic university) and remains one of the best European university.
Leuven grew as an important center of trade from the 11th to 14th century, then became known for its linen cloth, known in late 14-15th-century texts as lewyn (possibly a corruption of the town's name).
Leuven suffered a lot from the two World Wars in the 20th century, when the university library was destroyed twice, although completely rebuilt thereafter.
