May 1st 2003:Lev Manovich comes to Denmark
Russian born Lev Manovich is one of the most respected theoreticians in the field of digital aesthetic today, and unavoidable for anyone interested in digital art.
Manovich’s principle work is his Language of New Media (2001), an unusually well researched and thought through presentation of the so-called ‘new media’: the principals of digitalisation and its roots, as well as its aesthetic and cultural consequences.
Manovich is a researcher at the University of California, San Diego, where he probably isn’t seen very often if you consider how extensive his tour of lectures has been this year.

 Readings: Lev Manovich
Lev Manovich's work on the "language of new media" provides valuable ways for looking at new media from the point of view of structure rather than cultural content.
One of Manovich's key ideas is that the emphasis on the database within digital media is what distinguishes it from older media (film literature), which emphasize narrative sequence: “After the novel, and subsequently cinema, privileged narrative as the key form of cultural expression of the modern age, the computer age introduces its correlate—the database.
Manovich argues that many new media objects shift the emphasis from utterance to system—from the results of the search to the database itself and its menus of options.

In his discussion of the work of Benjamin and Virilio, Manovich (1996) notes significant similarities in both authors’ approach to “the intervention of technology into human nature.” He points out that both Benjamin and Virilio equate our perception of the natural with spatial distance between the observer and the observed.
Manovich uses concepts from film theory, art history, literary theory, and computer science and also develops new theoretical constructs, such as cultural interface, spatial montage, and cinegratography.
Among other topics, Manovich discusses parallels between the histories of cinema and of new media, digital cinema, screen and montage in cinema and in new media, and historical ties between avant-garde film and new media.

Manovich prefers the notion of "teleaction" to "telepresence" exactly because one is not present in the distant location, but one acts at a distance.
Lev Manovich's The Language of New Media is a very well written book (which can also be used as a database) which guides the reader through its rich contents by always providing short summaries of the chapter s/he just read or s/he is about to read.
In short: Manovich's precise observations of operations and forms of new media that can be found throughout the whole book come from his practical experience and make the book a very valuable, sometimes funny and even entertaining source of information on new media.

Lev Manovich and the Language of New Media
Lev Manovich we have since the end of the 19th century
According to Manovich, two fundamental principles can be identified: numerical representation (that all media objects are subject to algorithmic manipulation) and modularity (that any media object can be copied into or added to another object).
Lev Manovich has recently illustrated many of these observations in his art project Soft Cinema with a small book, a website, and several exhibitions, demonstrating the database form principle in different exhibition environments and in a Mondrian-inspired split-screen web format.

A perhaps conscious blind spot of Manovich's suggestion, already evident in "Language of New Media," was that "old" and emerging media are somewhat described in a social vacuum.
Manovich's response to this question was "Can you prove that social factors were at play?" Manovich’s historical trajectory was also merely linear suggesting that one occurrence leads directly to the next.

Lev Manovich & Andreas kratky, Soft Cinema. Navigating the Database. by Jan Baetens
First, Manovich has always argued that the digital revolution did not start with the computer, but with film, more particularly with Soviet montage, which “invented” in a sort what digital culture is now standing for.
Third (and this is of course the aspect of Manovich's thinking we owe this DVD to), the author has always linked, as tightly as Saussure did with signifier and signified, the hands-on approach of the practice-led researcher and the more speculative approach of the theorist.
And the art-historical and literary influences detailed by Lev Manovich in the accompanying interview (he mentions Mondrian for the mosaic-screen, financial television for the use of subtitles, high-modernist writers for the use of interior monologue) all reveal Manovich's bizarre rearview progress.
