Oistrakh was a big, romantic player but he could scale down his playing when necessary and the lyric delicacy of his phrasing here is memorable as are the very natural and discreet warming portamanti that fleck the opening of the first movement.
Knushevitzky is rock solid, his pizzicati in the skittish Pantoum perfectly accurate and Oborin is as ever an ensemble player of the highest distinction.
Oborin proves himself a master of this big-boned rhetoric; his opening statements are beautifully quiescent as the string players’ lines are attendant upon him.

 Prague Spring
In that year, 1946, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra was celebrating its fiftieth anniversary, and was therefore given the highest honor: to appear on all the orchestral concerts.
Such musicians as Karel Ančerl;, Leonard Bernstein, Sir Adrian Boult, Rudolf Firkušný, Jaroslav Krombholc, Rafael Kubelík, Moura Lympany, Yevgeny Mravinski, Charles Munch, Ginette Neveu, Jarmila Novotná, Lev Oborin, David Oistrakh and Jan Panenka have won enthusiastic ovations on the Prague Spring Festival stage.
Since 1952 the festival has opened with Bedřich Smetana´s cycle of symphonic poems Má vlast (My Country), and it closes with the ninth symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven.

Oistrakh is marvelous and Oborin provides a well balanced accompaniment.
Sometimes one gets the feeling that the first Chopin gold medalist, Oborin is not quite forthcoming as a full fledged soloist, although he is rather elegant and even quite poetic.

With the return of these stereo recordings by David Oistrakh and Lev Oborin (made in Paris in 1962), many collectors will find an automatic first choice.
That owes something to Oborin's greater restraint, an impression also bolstered by the aural perspective of the recordings in which the players are positioned considerably apart, with violin to the left and piano to the right.
Finally, there are also very special qualities in Oistrakh and Oborin's classically concise readings of the earlier sonatas, particularly the three Op.

Vintage recordings 1949-1951 from two Russian musical superstars, David Oistrakh (1906-1974) and Nicolai Golovanov (1891-1953), in relatively good sound restorations which maintain the intrinsic warmth of the principals.
Oistrakh’s playing here in 1949 is razor sharp, more in the Milstein manner, while Lev Oborin sails through the piano part.
The short works, featuring Oistrakh and Yampolski, regale us with the same lustrous and immaculate playing as graced the Oistrakh legend until his untimely death from overwork robbed us all of his stellar sound.
