Levantine Aurignacian   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Before this project, the Levantine Aurignacian was largely ambiguous, and was the source of some disagreement among various archaeologists in terms of what it represents.
The Levantine Aurignacian was named after the same industry in Europe, which is largely associated with the culture first anatomically modern humans entering into a land inhabited by Neanderthals and eventually replacing this native archaic stock.
With some understanding of the reduction sequences, it is possible to classify the assemblages at the scale of lineage and industry, and then identify potential sources of this variability, such as developmental changes revealed through chronological information, or adaptive responses to environmental and/or demographic stress, as reflected in technological strategies.

Levant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Levant or "Shām" (Arabic root word related to the term "Semite") is an approximate historical geographical term referring to a large area in Southwest Asia south of the Taurus Mountains, bounded by the Mediterranean Sea in the west, and the north Arabian Desert and Mesopotamia to the east.
Today, the Levantine or Sham Arabs are those living in or originating from: Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Israel, and usually Iraq.
The term Levant, originally used in the wider sense of "Mediterranean lands east of Italy", is first attested in English in 1497, from Middle French levant "The Orient", the participle of lever "to raise", as in soleil levant "rising sun", from Latin levare.

thomas friedman excerpt   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The Levantine political idea, which grew naturally among the communities of the eastern Mediterranean, was an original way of dealing with diverse tribal, village, and sectarian identities, and it inspired the Beirutis and ultimately the Lebanese to believe that they could build a modern Arab republic, melding together seventeen different Christian, Muslim, and Druse sects.
The Levantine idea posited the notion that if men cannot break with their tribal pasts, they can at least learn to check them at the door of the cities in which they live.
This Levantine spirit developed gradually in Beirut after the Industrial Revolution, as the burgeoning Lebanese silk trade and the invention of the steamboat combined to bring men and women of America and Western Europe in large numbers to the Levant.

Eurasian Prehistory - Levantine Aurignacian   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Nor does it produce the same heated discussion as seen in Europe, primarily because the Levantine Aurignacian is, for the most part, disassociated with the issue of archaic versus modern humans.
Researchers are divided between those who suggest a refined definition of the Levantine Aurignacian, on the basis of close similarities with the French Aurignacian, and those who prefer a broader definition that encompasses most assemblages that produce flakes, thick blades, and twisted bladelets.
Most of the disagreement is centered on whether or not Levantine Aurignacian assemblages are refined to a small strip the Mediterranean woodlands in northern Israel and Lebanon, or if they are also found within the steppe and desert regions of the marginal zone.

Morais brilliantly exemplified the Levantine Religious Humanism of the Sephardim whose rich legacy was subsequently occluded by the emergence of an Ashkenazi immigrant majority which brought many of its own internal schisms to the United States; schisms that have haunted Jews and the Jewish faith to this very day.
The Sephardic voice could unfold the delicate strands of the Levantine memory and construct a cultural model that would be more appropriate to the current situation than the spurious binarism promoted by the concept of Israel as an outpost of Western civilization.
The model of Levantine Jewish historical memory would serve to collapse the alienating cult of persecution harbored in classical Zionist thought and omnipresent in the rituals of the state of Israel, replacing it with a more positive view of the past that would lead us into a more optimistic present.

LATE GLACIAL FRESHENING OF THE LEVANTINE BASIN: ISOTOPIC EVIDENCE FROM ISKENDERUN BAY
The main goal of our study is to verify a possible influence of the Black Sea outflow on the post-Glacial Eastern Mediterranean exemplified by Iskenderun Bay (eastern Levantine Basin), using isotopic analysis of planktic (G. ruber) and benthic (buliminids, Ammonia tepida and Porosononion martkobi) foraminifera from 5 cores containing sediments from the last 14 ka.
O values of planktonic foraminifera from Iskenderun Bay (-2.03 to -0.17‰) are more negative (lighter) than those from the Levantine Basin (-1.42 to 0.6‰; Sperling et al., 2003) and totally different (0.1 to 1.9‰; Aksu et al., 2002) than those of the Marmara Sea.
Another contributor of southern Mediterranean origin, such as the Nile River (Rossignol-Strick et al., 1982; ODP Leg 160, Scientific Results) could be responsible for the freshening of the Levantine Basin, contradicting the Aksu hypothesis.
