  LEVITY
Levity's main character is Manuel Jordan (Billy Bob Thornton, Monster's Ball), who, as the picture opens, is being sprung after spending 23 years in the pokey.
Working the Community House door is how Manuel meets Levity's fourth spoke, Sofia Mellinger (Kirsten Dunst, The Cat's Meow), a quick-witted girl with cute mittens and an unyielding drive to spend most of her life in a drug-induced stupor.
Levity almost tricked me by making like it was going to turn into Dangerous Minds at the halfway mark, but thankfully that was just a passing vibe.

 DVD Review: Levity
"Levity" is his directorial debut and he was certainly able to pull together strong talent in front of the camera - Billy Bob Thornton, Morgan Freeman, Kirsten Dunst and others.
There's certainly not a lot of levity in the story of Manuel (Thornton), a convicted murderer who is unexpectedly released after serving 23 years.
"Levity" doesn't have a great deal of plot, as it shuffles from one scene to the other, with Thornton's character trying to make a difference in the lives of those around him.

Levity focuses on the characters, which are brought to life by the excellent cast (including Kirsten Dunst as a self-destructive club-goer).
"Levity" brings forward the solid acting muscle of three consolidated actors and a rising new talent to tell a story about redemption in a way that leaves some ends open, yet makes you get up at the end and think positively about life and potential for overcoming guilt and negative past experiences.
LEVITY is one of those quiet films that gains its strength from the characterizations and their interactions.

Levity (2003) - A Hollywood Jesus Movie Review
The message in the film, at least for me, was: In order to achieve Levity (lightness of being, freedom) you must first come to terms with the gravity of your own sin/reality.
We were fortunate enough that the people at Studio Canal believed in the project enough to back Levity for the foreign market, and we got some independent financing for the domestic market: a combination of bank loans and some equity funding.
But that’s one of the reasons that it appeals to me. The movie is about one man’s search for lightness and light in a world that has rejected him for a terrible mistake he made as a teenager.

 Welcome to Ethics Daily.com!
“Levity,” a new film from writer-director Ed Solomon, follows a convict just released from prison after serving more than 20 years for murder.
And as “Levity” simply but powerfully demonstrates, Manual can’t breathe because his world, his atmosphere, is dense with his own history.
“Levity” is grounded by many themes, perhaps none more important than the destroying and saving of worlds and souls.

Levity (2003) - About the Production
It’s always gratifying to a filmmaker when others share his dream...and in attempting to bring his original screenplay of Levity to the screen, Ed Solomon discovered that many other talented people, both in front of and behind the camera, were willing to take a risk on a smaller non-Hollywood film.
Kirsten Dunst was drawn to the project because she felt that Levity represented another opportunity to diversify her talents.
“Levity truly is an independent film that wasn’t backed by a studio or financing entity when we put the movie together,” notes producer Adam Merims.

 Metromix. Movie review: 'Levity'
Of course, "Levity" is an ironic title - even more so if you know Solomon made his mark as a writer with "It's Garry Shandling's Show" and gut-punchingly funny movies like the first "Men in Black" and the two "Bill and Ted" pictures.
This debuting writer-director has a flair for outrageous humor and plugged-in topical gags, but he just doesn't employ them in "Levity." Solomon seems to be trying to play down, or even choke off, his own commercial facility and lay bare a dramatic depth he hasn't often revealed before.
Good as this movie is, and strong as its intentions and execution may be, "Levity" seems, like Manual, imprisoned in its own sense of mission and gloom, seemingly unable to crack a smile.

 EI > DVD > Levity (2003)
Though well-crafted, writer-director Ed Solomon's "Levity" is a preachy and pretentious character study that fails to live up to its promising billing.
Despite an all-star cast that includes Billy Bob Thornton, Morgan Freeman, Holly Hunter and Kirsten Dunst, "Levity" is a plodding journey of the redemption of an ex-con (Billy Bob) who finds the sister (Holly Hunter) of the young man he murdered in his own youth, in hopes of finding forgiveness for his soul.
Though the plot may sound like a total downer, there are some nice elements to "Levity." Still, Ed Solomon's tale of redemption and atonement is a bit too plodding for its own good.

Manual's serious crime is depicted as something of an accident; not at all pre-meditated, and perpetrated by a kid caught in a frightening moment.

Levity is what's sorely lacking from this painfully earnest and gloomy redemption drama.
Beautifully shot in Montreal by the Coen brothers' regular cinematographer, Roger Deakins (Fargo), Levity is undermined by Solomon's obvious handling of the material.
Unlike Monster's Ball or the powerful Dead Man Walking (1995), Levity is ultimately more affected than affecting with regard to the lead character's quest for forgiveness.

"Levity" is about redemption; it is about a lot of things inside something ironically simple, about philosophy and the human mind, about thoughts, second chances and about many other things if I want to say them.

The music, a mix of powerful songs, is a key element in the development of the story, which maintains a mood of depression and sadness.
