We propose knowledge-based prediction, combination, and introduction of synthetic oligonucleotides encoding functional oligopeptide sequences (immunological epitopes, nucleic acids packaging and cell addressing sequences) into self-assembly competent carriers.
As such carriers, constituents of capsids and envelopes of Hepadnaviridae, Leviviridae, Sobemovirus origin are chosen.
Research training will include selection of active oligopeptide sequences, introduction of them into the desired sites onto the carriers, and structural and functional analysis of the fate of the inserted oligopeptides.

method of checking the rate of removal of pyrogenic substances, in particular viruses, from organic material - Patent ...
The removal rate is determined by passing viruses of the family Leviviridae through the filter or filtration unit, determining the titer of the viruses before and after filtration, and calculating the removal rate from this.
The Leviviridae used for determining the removal rate, 23 nm in diameter and with a molecular weight of 1.4 million daltons, are smaller than viruses pathogenic to humans and animals (H. Fraenkel-Conrat, The Viruses, Catalogue, Characterization and Classification, Plenum Press, 1982).
Leviviridae are therefore suitable for validation of ultrafilters to be selected for size.

Title : RUI: Early Stages in Levivirus Infection of Caulobacter Crescentus Abstract : 9723157 Poindexter The objectives of the proposed studies are to identify cell components of the Gram-negative bacterium Caulobacter crescentus that participate in the entry of spherical ssRNA viruses (Leviviridae bacteriophages) into susceptible cells.
The investigation will examine the hypothesis that pilin, in association with a specific outer membrane (OM) protein, provides adsorption sites for infecting virions, that lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or a protein(s) of the OM effect uncoating of the virion, and that the liberated viral RNA penetrates to the cytoplasm through OM-cytoplasmic membrane adhesion zones.
The studies will proceed as projects conducted by undergraduate student-scientists and will provide for them a technically diverse and sophisticated, but intellectually accessible and stimulating introduction to experimental cell biology.

Virus genomes contain various (partially overlapping) open reading frames and are an ideal test case for a procedure that makes usage of information about (overlapping) coding regions to improve the input alignments and, therefore, the identification of conserved secondary structures.

 Bacteriophages
At a post-transcriptional level, gene expression in bacteria is also regulated by control of translation.
The best known virus examples of this phenomenon come from study of bacteriophages of the family Leviviridae, such as R17, MS2 and Q-beta.
In these phages, the secondary structure of the single-stranded RNA phage genome regulates both the quantities of different phage proteins which are translated, but in addition, also operates temporal control of a switch in the ratios between the different proteins produced in infected cells.
