Under the hill called Old Levoca during the archaeologists excavated were found the foundations of a Romanesque church, the size of which was quite respectable: it is 23.5m long, the width of the nave is 12m and the apse is over 8m.
The oldest document, where Levoca is mentioned for the first time, was issued by Hungarian king Belo IV in 1249 after a Saxon immigration wave, the Levoca town became the administrative capital of the region Spis.
For all the 17th and the beginning of 18th the century the fortunes of Levoca was reversed as a result of one failed antiHasburg uprising, to the wars and the plague.

Levoca was a quaint looking little town, but we made the mistake of arriving there on a Sunday morning.
Levoca made it on Lonely Planet Eastern Europe's suggested itinerary stops for Slovakia, but apparently in fall, no one but us was taking note of that recommendation.
As soon as we arrived in Kosice, we knew that leaving Levoca for here was the right decision.

Leaving the city, the sign said something like "110km to Levoca" but the first half of the trip only took 1/2 an hour, on a freshly-paved 4-lane highway!
Of course, the second half was on a smaller road, with frequent stops in little towns and villages.
Levoca is a pretty little town dating back to the Middle Ages (another one?!) with old city walls and plenty of old buildings.

 Levoca, Kovice, Slovakia - White Pants Phenomenon
Once we got to Levoca we headed to the tourist information place on ideas on where to stay - normally not a problem - only a problem when you are going uphill the whole way and then to be told that the best one is right back near the bus station that you left.
This castle is was once known as the romantic castle as it is ruins of a white castle up on a hill very picturesque and secluded I would imagine?!?!
Didn't spend that long in Levoca as we headed off to Kosice the next day.

Torysky is a 12-mile drive up into the hills north of Levoca, past a couple of very small villages.
Our previous visits had all been in April, so it was wonderful to see how green it was in late May. We passed fields and forests, and spots with great views of Levoca to the south, and Spisskly Hrad, a striking white castle in the valley to the east (see photo above).
In the background is another cousin Peter, the one who used to be the mayor of Levoca.

 Marian Mount Levoca
Marian Mount was attracting people of Levoca and the inhabitants of the surrounding area from the beginning of the 14th century.
The Chapel was rebuilt numerous times and enlarged in 1698, 1766 and 1819-1820.
Levoca's priest ordered chapel for Greek Catholics in 1841 and soon after famous Levoča's painter Jozef Czauczik repainted the statute of Virgin Mary to today's likeness.
