		Lew Ayres achieved quick fame in Hollywood, and is best known for his role as Dr. Kildare in a series of films in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
		Ayres was offered the title role in a television series based on Dr. Kildare, but the network refused to honor his request that the series not be sponsored by any cigarette manufacturers.
		Ayres was born Lewis Frederick Ayres III on Dec. 28, 1908, in Minneapolis, MN.

		Ayres was superb, but his gentle demeanor and callow handsomeness resulted in his being stereotyped in film roles as a spoiled rich boy (though one of these roles, as Katharine Hepburn's perennially drunken younger brother in Holiday (1938), was among the actor's best work).
		Ayres' star status was boosted in 1938 when he was hired to play Dr. Kildare in MGM's long-running series of Kildare B-pictures.

		Ayres was a dance-band musician not yet out of his teens when, spotted by Hollywood talent scouts, he made his film debut in 1929's The Sophomore and appeared opposite Greta Garbo in The Kiss that same year.
		After the war, Ayres regained public favor in several fine films, including The Dark Mirror (1946), The Unfaithful (1947), and, especially, Johnny Belinda (1948), for which he was Oscar-nominated as a kindly small-town doctor.
		Ayres' lifelong interest in religion led him to almost singlehandedly make Altars of the East (1955) and Altars of the World (1976), documentaries based on his own research and written works.
