In Lewes this event not only marks the date of the uncovering of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, but also commemorates the memory of 17 Protestant martyrs who were burnt at the stake in the town during the Marian persecutions of 1555–1557.
Lewes itself currently has seven bonfire societies (Nevill Juveniles is a children's society and holds its celebrations a week or two before the 5th November; Southover, which disbanded in 1985, reformed in 2005) and a number of nearby towns have their own bonfire societies.

In 1898, Lewes merged with the Chaileyand West Firle Unions, with the new body continuing under the name of Lewes Union.
The Lewes workhouse was subsequently rented by the Revd Harold Burden, a former missionary, and a leading figure in the creation and operation of reformatories for inebriates at the turn of the 19th century.
Lewes was the Southern Counties reformatory licensed in November 1902 for 130 female inebriates who were admitted directly from court.

LEWES BEACH - Secretary of State Harriet Smith Windsor today unveiled new signs at Lewes Beach to educate visitors about the artifacts from an 18th-century shipwreck that continue to wash up onshore.
Windsor was joined by other state officials, including Lewes Mayor Jim Ford, and by volunteers from the Delaware Marine Archaeological Society and the Archaeological Society of Delaware, who are heavily involved in the community effort to retrieve, process, and identify the artifacts.
Lewes Mayor Jim Ford praised the "excellent coordination between the state and city" and the "friendly tone" of the signs, which foster community involvement in the project.
