In dedicating this nineteenth century physician's office we honor the twenty past presidents of the Medical Society of Delaware from Lewes and vicinity, the many physicians who have practiced nearby since 1674, the Medical Society of Delaware founded in 1766 and incorporated in 1789, and the Sussex County Medical Society founded in 1863.
His mother was the granddaughter of Dr. Joshua Fisher who landed in Lewes in 1725 to become Sussex County's first and one of Lewes' and the American Colonies' most prominent physicians.
In October of 1884 the first Marine Hospital at Lewes was erected near the point of the Cape and Dr. Orr was appointed Chief Assistant Surgeon.

Circa 1730, this charming gambrel-roofed house was moved from the country at Cool Spring in 1980 as part of the celebration of the 350th anniversary of the first European settlement on Delaware soil.
Colonel Hall, who commanded the celebrated "Delaware Line" of the Continentals during the Revolutionary War at Valley Forge, is buried in the Lewes Presbyterian Church yard.
The Lewes Presbyterian Church was founded in 1682, and the present building was dedicated in 1832.

 Cape May–Lewes Ferry
Within weeks after the Delaware Memorial Bridge opened, construction of the New Jersey Turnpike was completed, connecting New York with Delaware and points south through the entire length of the state of New Jersey.
Throughout the 1950s, political and business leaders in both Delaware and New Jersey pushed for creation of a ferry system between Lewes and Cape May. The Garden State Parkway was constructed along the Atlantic coast of New Jersey to New York, but "Exit Zero" at Cape May was scheduled to become a traffic dead end.
Delaware was less than 20 miles south, but the 17-wide mouth of the bay was in-between.

The trail passes through the towns of Lewes, Milton, and Bridgeville, but is mostly in open farmland.
Cape Henlopen is located near Lewes, the 1631 site of the first Dutch settlement in Delaware called Zwaanendael, "Valley of the Swans."
