Eridge station opened with the opening of the LBandSCR line from Groombridge to Uckfield on 3 August 1868, providing a route to Brighton via the line from Lewes to Uckfield which had by then been open for some ten years.
Eridge station prospered over the years with trains leaving in four directions, to Lewes via Uckfield, to Polegate via Hailsham, to Tunbridge Wells via Groombridge and direct to Oxted, and was expanded to provide two through platforms and two bay platforms plus goods facilities.
This second route, which was nicknamed "The Cuckoo Line" by railway workers after the Sussex tradition that the first cuckoo of spring was released by a little old lady at the annual Heathfield Cuckoo Fair, produced a lot of milk traffic to and from Horam as well as through traffic to Eastbourne and Hastings.

New railway lines were built; existing ones were electrified; and new stations were constructed to handle commuters from new and intended suburban housing estates.
It is unstaffed (although a newsagents still operates in part of the frontage), and one of the two railway tracks running through the station has been removed, leaving a derelict and crumbling concrete platform opposite the operational one.
The frontage of the station was largely constructed in a typical art deco style, with corners incorporating windows that smoothly curved round the sides of the building.

 5 Lewes to Eastbourne
The station house was similar to those at London Road Brighton and Portslade and a subway and stairs led to two island platforms.
This station was allegedly altered or rebuilt in 1872 and again in 1886 to the present design, other than the addition of the new booking hall on the north side in the 1930s.
In Station Road they are more easily discernable, with that of the earlier alignment leading to the Cuckoo Trail, for walkers and cyclists, which follows the route of the old line to Heathfield.
