Lewi Tonks (1897-1971) was an American quantum physicist noted for his discovery (with Marvin D. Girardeau) of the Tonks-Girardeau gas.
Tonks was employed by the General Electric for most of his working life, researching microwaves and ferromagnetism.
Tonks advocated a logarithmic pressure scale for vacuum technology to replace the torr.

First his improvement of vacuum techniques led to the invention of the high-vacuum tube.
A year later he and colleague Lewi Tonks discovered that the lifetime of a tungsten filament was greatly lengthened by filling the bulb with an inert gas, such as argon, which is an important part of the modern day incandescent light bulb.
As he continued to study filaments in vacuum and different gas environments he began to study the emission of charged particles from hot filaments (thermionic emission).

A brief history of plasma physics
The Nobel prize winning American chemist Irving Langmuir first used this term to describe an ionized gas in 1927--Langmuir was reminded of the way blood plasma carries red and white corpuscles by the way an electrified fluid carries electrons and ions.
Langmuir, along with his colleague Lewi Tonks, was investigating the physics and chemistry of tungsten-filament light-bulbs, with a view to finding a way to greatly extend the lifetime of the filament (a goal which he eventually achieved).
In the process, he developed the theory of plasma sheaths--the boundary layers which form between ionized plasmas and solid surfaces.

Motivated by this, Lewi Tonks derived the equation of state not just for a two-dimensional gas, but for a one-dimensional and three-dimensional gas as well, ignoring the nature of the forces between them and treating the simplest case of hard elastic spheres.
He?s developed an exact one-dimensional theory of histone adsorption and wrapping on DNA by considering each histone as a Tonks gas particle, which I think is pretty neat; after all, histones are pretty much hard spheres confined to a line of sorts - as wikipedia puts it, they ?act as spools around which DNA winds?.
But the Tonks gas is important in other areas of physics, as well - in particular, in the study of atomic gases at low temperature and particle density.

The most significant correspondence dealing with Smyth's involvement with the AEC is filed with the subject heading "Oppenheimer security clearance." Five folders contain letters sent from colleagues in the science community across the country, voicing their support for Oppenheimer, outrage at the actions of the AEC, and agreement with Smyth's dissenting opinion.
Also located in these folders is much of the preliminary correspondence between Smyth, Lewis R. Strauss, and their fellow commissioners as the Oppenheimer investigation unfolded.
Smyth's involvement with the Edison Electric Institute's Technical Appraisal Task Force is thoroughly documented in thirteen correspondence files which span nearly three boxes of Series I. The Task Force material appears in the form of agendas, reports, and minutes enclosed with correspondence.
