Well known for his imaginative treatment of environmental issues, Kevin Dann presents a natural history of the Lewis Creek watershed in Vermont's Champlain Valley, told largely through the lives and thought of three individuals, whose investigations brought them into close contact with the area.
His language reinforces the truth that cultural history and natural history are intertwined and interpretable through shared metaphors: people and places existing at the margins; native and exotic residents and species; evidence of past lives writ on rocks and headstones.
Lewis Creek Lost and Found could well serve as a model of how one may capture other "lost" landscapes, unpack their complexity, and weave them into patterns of contemporary social and cultural dramas.
