Baltz's photographs in "New Topographics" consisted entirely of images of an industrial warehouse complex in Southern California, several of which are on view in this exhibition.
Tracing the incursion of housing developments into the desert valleys surrounding Reno, Nevada, Baltz alternated panoramic views of the horizon with photographs of construction sites, trailer parks, and city streets to show an open landscape slowly being devoured.
Nevada was the first step toward a pictorial methodology of intensely detailed mapping that Baltz was to explore over the next decade, culminating in his epic project, Candlestick Point.

Lewis Baltz, a native of Newport Beach, California, received an M.F.A. in photography from the Claremont Graduate School in 1971.
He gained prominence in the "New Topographic" movement of the 1970s with such series as "The Tract House" and "The New Industrial Parks," dispassionate records of the desolation and destruction wrought by development in the western United States.
He received Guggenheim and NEA fellowships in 1977 and turned his camera to such projects as "Nevada," photographs of the wreckage caused by development in the Nevada desert, and "Park City," a study of housing developments in a bedroom community for Salt Lake City.

Some of the ten photographers (including Baltz) in that show have gone on to exhibit and publish books about the man-altered landscape.
The book is as minimalist as the photos, apart from the simple captions there is no essay about Baltz (at least not in my German produced copy which does not have a photo on the cover) no page numbers, nothing on the inside flaps or back of the cover.
The photos are not as rigid as those by Baltz and frequently show how the natural landscape has been changed by heavy industry.
