The county was named in honor of Daniel Boone (1734-1820), the famous hunter and explorer, founder of Kentucky, Lieutenant Colonel of the Virginia militia, and member of the Virginia General Assembly representing Kanawha County (in 1791).
Brooke County was named in honor of Robert Brooke (1751-1799), who was educated at the University of Edinburgh, practiced law in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, served in the Virginia General Assembly in 1794 and, later that year, was elected the third Governor of Virginia (1794-1796) by the General Assembly.
The county's economy become stagnant during the Civil War, and the burning of Guyandotte, one of the county's major population centers, was a major blow to the local economy.

The new county was formed to enable the area's residents to vote and attend court without having to travel all the way to Clarksburg.

Opposition to the bond issue comes primarily from the west end of the county where the population is smaller and the perception expressed is that the east end gets the better facilities.
County activist Joan Browning said she opposes the bond issue in favor of finding a way to address the needs of the entire county.
According to the commission, the only county ordinance in place that would address any problem like this, is their abandoned building ordinance.

From West Virginia Route 180 turn onto Elk Fork Road.(County Route 11) Go 8.4 miles to Scale Run Road (which is actually still Elk Fork Road), turn left and go 1.6 miles to Eight Mile Ridge Road.
