Stevenson served as a delegate to the Democratic convention of 1884 that nominated Grover Cleveland for president.
At dinner, Stevenson said he resented the familiar charge that vice presidents were never consulted by the president and told a story about Vice President John Breckinridge once being consulted by President James Buchanan—about the wording of his Thanksgiving message.
Through Stevenson's long career, his wife Letitia was a "keen observer and judge of people, and a charming hostess." Although suffering from migraine headaches and severe rheumatism that forced her to wear leg braces when standing at receptions, she dutifully supported his many political campaigns.

This photo was taken sometime around 1940 or later on the front steps of the Lewis County Courthouse in Vanceburg.
Callihan seems to be standing in a field across the gravel at the north end of the depot.
This old post card says: Hauling gas pipe in Lewis County, Vanceburg, Ky. There is no date on the post card but the first pipe line in the county was laid in the very early 1900s, so that is probably the time period of this card.
