Lewis Milestone (born Lewis Milstein in the Ukraine) came to the U.S. as a teenager, and while in the Army during World War I was an assistant director on training films.
Milestone's comedy Two Arabian Knights (1927) was widely admired, but the director didn't hit his stride until 1930 with All Quiet on the Western Front, his landmark adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's war novel.
In the '30s Milestone scored major achievements in several genres, including comedy (The Front Page [1931]), musical (Hallelujah, I'm a Bum [1933]), and espionage (The General Died at Dawn [1936]); he capped the decade with his classic drama Of Mice And Men (1939), adaptated from John Steinbeck's novella.

 Lewis Milestone
In Milestone, reality and image combine as they will, separate as they will, or pass into symbol, a symbol among images in a reality like a chorus, an image that persists as symbol, then is realized as reality, image, symbol at once.
The Strange Love of Martha Ivers is distinctly oneiric, and Milestone owes this sustained tour de force to Robert Rossen’s script and Miklos Rozsa’s almost constant music, as well as his own stretching of cinematically exact resources almost if not beyond capacity.
The charge is that Marlon Brando wrecked the film, wasted Carol Reed’s time, and ended Lewis Milestone’s career, by recklessly behaving in an amateur fashion, and causing a critical and commercial failure, thus beginning a record of insults that has lasted to the present day.

Milestone would extend his mastery of wartime fiction to include the Korean War, captured in the equally fine, equally sobering Pork Chop Hill.
Lewis Milestone's solid, low-key war film manages to avoid the flag-waving clichés of most WWII pictures, as it concentrates on the thoughts of the members of an infantry platoon as they undertake an assault on a German-held farmhouse outside Salerno.
Robert Rossen's script is less dramatic than novelistic in its effect, as the voice-over narration allows the characters to express the fear of death, boredom, cynicism, and even their rapport with their weapons, in a way that's rare in a combat...

Milestone uses an early split screen effect to inform us seamlessly of all of the goings-on in the various thread of the plot.
Therefore it is driven more by character than by plot, unlike the fun but mass-produced programmers that began to follow when the rumblings of world war got louder.
TGD@D is sometimes slow, but always atmospheric and well-shot, with indistinctly noirish tension and nifty direction by Lewis Milestone (All Quiet on the Western Front, Halls of Montezuma) bailing it out most of the time.
