Junior defence minister Lewis Moonie said researchers from King's College London, would be monitoring personnel who served in the conflict for possible physical or psychological problems.
The findings will form the basis of a questionnaire to be distributed to a "large representative cohort" of the 45,000 soldiers, sailors and airmen who were deployed in the Gulf region, seeking information about their health status and possible exposure to harmful substances.
In addition, any British personnel who were deployed in the Gulf and who are worried about their health will be able to attend a medical assessment programme run by the ministry at Saint Thomas's Hospital in London.

The Minister responsible for Veterans Affairs, Dr Lewis Moonie, told the House of Commons that the mistake could have begun as long ago as 1919 when the pensions paid to people who left the army on medical grounds were first exempted from tax.
A four year investigation of army pension files has identified 1003 cases where compensation is due and all but 14 of those have been paid at a total cost of £6.5 million — around £6500 each on average.
When the error was revealed in The Daily Telegraph last week, Dr Moonie said that the total costs of compensating people could be as high as £30 million, implying that there were still another 3500 veterans or their descendants to be found.
