Payne, who was captured shortly after the attack, was part of a conspiracy in the days after the end of the Civil War to kill not only Lincoln and Seward but also Vice President Andrew Johnson and General Ulysses S. Grant.
Payne -- who was also known as Lewis Powell -- was a native Alabaman who fought for the Confederacy.
Payne and other accused conspirators were tried - Robinson testified at the trial - and on July 7 were hanged.

Lewis Thornton Powell (April 22, 1844 – July 7, 1865), also known as Lewis Paine or Payne, attempted unsuccessfully to assassinate United States Secretary of State William Seward, and was one of four people hanged for the Lincoln assassination conspiracy.
Powell was born in Randolph County, Alabama, to a Baptist minister.
Powell was tried under the name of "Payne" by a military tribunal and was executed with three other conspirators on July 7, 1865.

Searching for the graves of Col. Lewis & Elizabeth P. Lewis in Fayette Co. The home built by Col Lewis is still standing, but a previous owner of the farm plowed over the graveyard (probably in 1930's) including a 15 ft marble monument upon which was engraved Lewis's Revolutionary War record.
