Paul Gravett: Article - Lewis Trondheim
Trondheim's initial 'anti-drawing', his pride in his apparent deficiencies, flouted the French-language commercial tradition of bande dessinée albums, the massive BD mainstream of Tintin and Asterix, Moebius and Bilal.
Trondheim has never re-read all this epic since and it doesn't entirely stand up, except as an inspiring lesson in comics self-education and as a blueprint for things to come.
Trondheim reveals more of the self-doubts and foibles of a struggling cartoonist, husband, father and grouchy, contradictory person, in a freewheeling flow of family life and friends, and of the craft and graft of cartooning.

Lewis Trondheim, a popular figure in the French comics scene, is well known for his Lapinot series (Fantagraphics translated two volumes a number of years ago), creating the Donjon series with Joann Sfar (in translation from NBM), and being one of the founders of French indie publisher L’Association (no website!).
Trondheim’s first book “Psychanalyse” (1990) consisted of a single head (some sort of creature) repeated endlessly in small panels with different word balloons in each panel.
Trondheim has just put out a kind of companion volume called Mister I about a guy who looks kind of like a pickle (he is a long green oval) and is always trying to satisfy his hunger.

Trondheim's stories in this issue of The Nimrod (which is a one-man anthology of various works of Trondheim's translated from his native French to English) have an almost fairy-tale quality about them.
Trondheim's art is extremely loose and cartoonish; it's almost more of a doodle than what you'd expect to see as finished art in comics.
Trondheim's style also allows him to pack a lot of material on each page, with almost every page having 16 panels on them.

Most interesting is Trondheim's recollection of his sole visit to summer camp, in which he and some friends, inspired by THE EXORCIST, frightened another little boy by pretending to be possessed.
The nostalgic recollection is more bitter than sweet, and though Trondheim assuages his guilty conscience by concluding that "some people are born victims," it's clear that he's still working out some of his own demons in the pages of The Nimrod.
Trondheim employs a very basic three-tiered page structure for every page, setting a nice even pace through the book even as the narrative jumps from one vignette to the next.

Their “present day” Dungeon Zenith is a wonderful parody of sword and sorcery stories while still having a strong backbone of its own, and the “prequel” Dungeon Early Years installments have been an entertaining mix of intrigue and swashbuckling.
Trondheim and Sfar’s writing in Dungeon Twilight (the first four volumes of which are collected into two books for the English-language edition) is bordering on the edge of depressing, especially in what was the original first volume of this storyline.
As the story progresses the level of darkness lets up a bit (perhaps Trondheim and Sfar deliberately pulling back from the benchmark they set in the first installment).
