This is the earliest known attempt at bilingual lexicography in Irish.
Lexicography of various kinds has been practised in Irish from that time down to our own day – a journey of about 1,250 years.
In any case the journey of over one thousand two hundred years travelled by Irish lexicography from the glossist of Würzburg to the new Foras na Gaeilge dictionary is one of which we can be justifiably proud.

Lexicography is the art and craft of making dictionaries –; all types of dictionaries, from scholarly, historical works to dictionaries for language learners in type, from monolingual to bilingual to multilingual in scope, from online to print in format.
Theoretical lexicography involves a certain amount of linguistics, and is related to (but is not the same as) lexicology.
Practical lexicography is, as its name suggests, the actual compilation of dictionaries, and covers not only selecting facts to go in the dictionary, and presenting them appropriately, but also the use of corpus-querying and dictionary-compiling software.

Lexicography is one aspect of applied linguistics with no specific training programmes.
The goal of this program is to prepare high-level lexicography professionals, who can take part not only in the writing task of a dictionary, but also in the conception, organization and coordination of lexicographic and terminological projects.
Lexicography professionals must be able to describe the language or languages they work with, they must know the principles of general monolingual lexicography and the specificities of other lexicographic and terminological products.
