Lexington is a city located in Lafayette County, Missouri, United States.
Lexington was the site of one of the largest battles in the western campaign of the American Civil War.
On September 12, 1861, 18,000 Confederate soldiers of the Missouri militia, led by Major General Sterling Price began a siege against the military post commanded by Colonel James A. Mulligan.

Lexington’s proud history is seen today in the numerous historic sites open to the public and the preservation of over 100 historic buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Lexington’s Lafeyette County Courthouse is the oldest courthouse in continuous use west of the Mississippi.
One modification to the original structure is the cannonball embedded in the east column, a souvenir of the Confederate victory in the 1861 Battle of Lexington.

Lexington's first settler was probably Gillad Rupe who came to the area around 1815 from Boonville where he had operated a ferry.
A road south from Lexington to the Trace was declared by the court to be the "nearest and best" route to Fort Osage in October 1821.
Lexington was platted in 1822 in the area later known as "Old Town" and became the county seat in 1823 with a log courthouse in a public square between Lewis and Clark (now 23rd and 24th) Streets.

The census of 1860 made Lexington, with a population of 4,122, the state's fifth largest community; by summer, 1861, the population figure had steadily increased, each arrival of a river steamer contributing its share of settlers to the city.
Lexington, besides being the area's political, financial and educational seat, home of three colleges, was also the center of wholesale and retail trade for a large section of western and southern Missouri.
The restoration, originally sponsored by the City of Lexington and local organizations, by Lafayette County, and by the Missouri Division of Resources and Development, was taken over in 1959 by the State Park Board, which now administers the improvements and maintenance.

On the 19th, the Rebels consolidated their positions, kept the Yankees under heavy artillery fire and prepared for the final attack.

The casualty count from the Battle of Lexington was 25 killed and 75 wounded on Price's side, while the Federals had 39 killed and 120 wounded.
Lexington and the Missouri River Valley once again returned to Union control.
