This followed negotiations between Leyland and one K. Forster, an officer of Weston Tennis Courts Limited, in respect of Leyland agreeing to release his share in the company if some permanent basis could be established whereby the land would always be used for tennis.

Croston is bounded by the parish of Hoole on the north, by Standish and Ormskirk parishes on the south, by Tarleton and Rufford on the west, and by Leyland and Eccleston on the east.
The parish church of Croston, dedicated to St. Michael, in the deanery of Leyland, and the archdeaconry, of Chester, is a large structure, consisting of a tower, nave, side aisles, chancel, and two chapels, and is situated near the middle of the village in the vale of the Yarrow.
On a monument in Leyland church is an inscription, from which it would appear that Christopher, the last named, was married a second time, or that the pedigree of Banister and Ashton of Middleton are both erroneous.

Pre-war Leyland Tiger diesels, which became more numerous during the late 1930s, were unpopular with bus crews, especially the drivers, who preferred the petrol equivalents.
Leyland's powerful 9.8-litre O.600 engine, driving through a four-speed synchromesh gearbox, made the new P class of PS series Tigers easy to drive and well capable of keeping up with their petrol-engined stablemates.
However, this did not happen overnight: P class buses were still at work until 1972 and the introduction of the school bus network in 1967 brought into the CIE fleet fifty Tigers from another great Irish transport tradition which I hope to deal with in a later article.

Two of Leyland’s virtues as a writer can immediately be seen – he knows how to start a book in a gripping fashion and he knows how to hold back surprises as he unravels a mystery.
Leyland has no need to worry about this for most readers will be content to swap the pleasure they get from the “surprise” ending for the smugness they can feel when they spot in advance what is about to happen and are shown to be proved right.
The way in which Leyland makes the trivial assume an unprecedented degree of importance is cleverly done and this is well illustrated by the election of the cricket captain episode.
