Leyland Truck and Bus was spilt into Leyland Bus and Leyland Trucks in 1981.
The Leyland Bus operations was divested as a management buy-out (sold to its management) and subsequently bought by Volvo Buses in 1988, which discontinued most of its product range.
Historically, Leyland Motors was a major manufacturer of buses used in the United Kingdom and world-wide, being probably most famous for the trend-setting Atlantean rear-engined double decker design produced between 1956 and 1986.

Leyland was one of the biggest names in the British motor industry, and the world's largest exporter of commercial vehicles.
Since its introduction in 1972 the Leyland National became one of the most commonplace buses on the roads throughout the British Isles, all nearly identical in appearance yet seemingly different.
This book is not aimed specifically at the Leyland National or any other vehicle, yet it is a useful tool for all those contemplating buying a bus with the intention of preservation.

Although the first experimental rear-engined bus was of conventional rear entrance design, later developments made it possible to move the entrance to the front of the vehicle, initially so that the driver could supervise loading whilst the conductor collected the fares, but later it was to prove conducive to one-man-operation.
Leyland had recognised that, for a variety of reasons, the fully integral Titan would not suit every one of their customers, so a new double-deck chassis was developed.
Although, initially, Leyland Bus was operated as a separate division of Volvo Bus, in September 1988 the company was re-named VL Bus and Coach (UK) Ltd., effectively ending over 80 years of the Leyland name.

 History
Leyland Bus was bought by its management in 1986.
When Leyland Trucks were about to merge with (or, rather, be taken over by) DAF, the political rationale was said to be that Leyland Trucks was too small to survive on its own, and the combined company would be better able to compete in the European market.
Leyland Bus was a particularly absurd creation on that rationale, because there have been very few manufacturers of full-size buses that did not also make trucks.

The DUTC fleet consisted of 242 Leyland Titans and 4 Tigers double-deckers and 84 Lion single-deckers.
But CIÉ was not satisfied with Leyland, as the Dublin city fleet had experienced a 25% failure rate in fleet availability.
In 1977 CIÉ asked a bus designer, Otto Schultz of Hamburg Consult, to design a new bus family based on General Motors engines, Allison transmissions and Rockwell axles and a contract with American Motors General was negotiated to build the buses.

This, combined with serious industrial relations problems (principally, the company's relations with hard-line Socialist Trade Unions of the time), and ineffectual management meant that BL became an unmanageable and financially crippled behemoth whose bankruptcy in 1975 was inevitable.
Many of the brands were divested over time and continue to exist to this day, although the British Leyland name came to an end in 1982.
In contrast to the continued development of competing models, British Leyland continued the practice of badge engineering of models which had started under BMC; selling essentially the same vehicle under two (or more) different marques.

The jump in bus sales contrasts starkly with total medium and heavy commercial vehicles sales, which plunged 20.7 per cent in the first eight months of financial year 2000-01 (April-March) to 49,894 units.
