Leyland P76 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Leyland P76 was a large car produced by Leyland Australia, the Australian subsidiary of British Leyland.
The top-of-the-line aluminium alloy 4416 cm³ V8 unit was unique to the P76, and was a development of the ex-Buick V8 that was powering the Rover 3500.
The Leyland plant at Zetland closed in October 1974, and production of the P76 ceased, although assembly continued in New Zealand, where it was sold successfully in V8 form, until 1976.

When Leyland Australia discovered the parent company planned to build a conventional car of the approximate size and specification it wanted, this car –; the Marina – was substituted as a relatively short-term model to enable work to progress on the bigger, and at that time, more important P76.
Leyland plans to introduce a four door sedan with a fifth, hatchback door at the rear, rather like the Renault 16.
Leyland is experimenting with a fibre-optics system which works rather like a mini-TV screen in projecting the information from the actual instruments onto the instrument lenses in front.

The Morris Marina was renamed the Leyland Marina and given four and six cylinder versions of the E series engine.
Giovanni Michelotti styled the car, but Leyland Australia redesigned the front and rear ends – the rear end of the car was and still is the least popular aspect of the vehicle.
Leyland Australia’s financial position was worsening as a result of falling sales and P76 came to be the car that would make or break Leyland Australia.

 Leyland
The P76 was launched in 1973 by BMC-Leyland in an attempt to break into the lucrative “Family Car” segment being held firmly by the 'Big Three', GM Holden with the Kingswood, Ford with the Falcon and Chrysler with the Valiant.
But the P76 was to have a dogged life — many pinning the eventual failure squarely at the marketing guys who, while correctly pointing out that its boot was big enough to hold a 44 gallon drum, left most Aussies scratching their heads and asking why.
In fact, only ten survived: one was sent to Leyland in the UK for testing and was subsequently bought by a British private collector; another is in the Birdwood Mill Museum in South Australia.

 MILESAGO - Features - The Leyland P76
What influence Leyland’s rivals Ford, Holden and Chrysler may have exerted is unknown, but given that the P76 was in many respects superior to the competition it is not unreasonable to assume that, at the very least, a certain amount of media “spin-doctoring” may have occurred.
This was a pitfall that Leyland's competitor Chrysler had avoided by sharing many sheet metal and component parts between the Chargers and the Valiant sedans.
Only ten survived: one was sent to Leyland in the UK for testing and was subsequently bought by a British private collector; another is in the Birdwood Mill Museum in South Australia.

For the ordinary motorist in the early 1970s, the impending arrival of the Leyland P76 was exciting news.
Problems with quality control and lack of dealer's showroom stock meant that the P76 was never going to be able to match the Big Three and when the fuel crisis raised its ugly head, it signalled the end of the Leyland, even though the P76's fuel consumption was no worse than that of its competitors.
Leyland Australia had a couple more aces up its sleeve in the form of the Force 7V Coupe and a planned station wagon but these never got to go on sale.

The P76 Executive is 'Bitter Apricot' and the station wagon 'Country Cream’ Somebody at Leyland picked the colours from a Dulux range and they or somebody else gave them the witty names.
Leyland being Leyland, when it wanted to get rid of the wagon it might just as easily have shoved it under a press.

 Leyland P76
When the P76 was launched on the 1st June 1973, the Leyland Australia had accrued losses totalling Aus $30 million, and it provided something of a grim backdrop to the car's launch.
The P76 was offered with a longitudinally mounted E6 engine, which had been expanded from 2227cc (as used in the Kimberley) to 2622cc.
The Leyland P76 was unfortunately very short lived (being taken out of production at the end of 1974), and this is because BLMC were forced to close the Leyland-Australia factory at Zetland, downsizing the operation significantly.

The Michelotti styled Leyland P76 could have swept away all before it: the styling was right for the time and place, the V8 engined version was strong, and a promising range of upcoming variations meant the P76 could have done nothing but succeed.
Leyland P76 in the UK The P76 was seriously evaluated for sale in the UK.

The P76 uses hollow pushrods to oil a very simple set of pressed steel rockers which are stud mounted as opposed to the normal shaft mounted rockers.
Leyland used the Chevy type rocker types because they were cheaper to produce, not because they were considered superior.
I don't think Standard P76 hollow pushrods are an suitable option, specially with Rover/Buick heads because they don't require valve stem seals due their rocker design.

 Leyland P76 & Force 7
he P76 as styled by Michelotti, was offered with the E6 engine in 2622cc form or "Rover" V8 manual or automatic form - the V8 was available in 4416cc displacement, as opposed to the standard 3528cc used in Euopean and US Rovers.
The car was later used by Lord Stokes as his personal transport, before being sold via auction to an enthusiast.
The P76 was thoroughtly evaluated for local (UK) consumption, but after consideration, the plan was dropped as the gap between the Rover SD1 and the Jaguar XJ6 3.4 was far too narrow to justify the expense of local homologation.
