Li was born in Leting (a county of Tangshan), Hebei province to a peasant family.
Li was elected to the KMT's Central Executive Committee in 1924.
With the outbreak of the Chinese Civil War, Li was captured during a raid on the Soviet embassy in Peking (Beijing) and, with nineteen others, he was executed on the orders of the warlord of Chang Tso-Lin on April 28, 1927.

In response to the unpopularity of his plan to revive the monarchy, Yuan canceled his imperial plans and organized a republican cabinet under Duan Qirui (1865–1936), senior general in the Beiyang militarist clique.
Yuan died on June 6 and was succeeded as president by Li Yuanhong (1864–1928), who promptly restored the constitution of 1912 and convoked the original parliament of 1913.
Li Yuanhong resigned, leaving the presidency to Vice President Feng Guozhang (1857–1919, elected Oct. 1916).

Li Hongzhang wanted at all costs to avoid a war with Japan, and attempted this by asking for international pressure for a Japanese withdrawal.
As an ally of Li Hongzhang, Yuan was appointed the commander of the first New army in 1895.

Li Dazhao, having steered away members towards communism, apparently took pleasure in memberships in multiple socieities, organizations and parties, and later in 1922, was to launch a "Democratic Socialist Party" or the sort.

Under the Ganghwa Treaty signed in 1876, Japan was allowed to send diplomatic missions to Seoul, and opened trading posts in Inchon and Wonsan.
Amidst an internal power struggle, which resulted in the queen's exile, Li Hongzhang, the Viceroy of Zhili, sent the Qing Brigade, 3,000 strong, into Korea.
To the emperor, Li Hongzhang also recommended Yuan's promotion, and was approved shortly with Yuan's new rank as sub-prefect.

On 28th, Li Yuanhong issued a second appeal for "experienced and trained soldiers as well as cannons" and stated that he would defend Wuchang city to death.

 Coins of the Chinese Republic
Li Yuanhong succeeded to the presidency and was immediately faced with dissension from his Prime Minister and an attempt to restore the monarchy.
Similar coins were issued the same year with the portrait of Li Yuandong in military uniform with and without a cap and minted at Wuchang.
Coins were produced in the Japanese controlled areas of East Hopei in 1937 (5 Li, 1 fen, 5 fen, 1 jiao), Meng Chiang in Northern China during 1938 (a copper coin of 5 jiao) and by the Provisional Government of China centred on Beijing.

One of the leaders of the Wuchang uprising (Wuchang qiyi 武昌起義), Li Yuanhong 黎元洪, was chosen as governor (dudu 都督) of the independent Hubei military government, and from this area, the outline for a provisional national government was promoted that sould be administered from Nanjing.
His central government, lead by one party, the Guomindang, was structured in five courts (see political system of the Republic), and his government was internationally acknowledged as the representant of China.
In 1929 Jiang was able to destroy the Guizhou Clique (Guixi 桂系) under Li Zongren 李宗仁 and Bai Chongxi 白崇禧, and in 1930 he could finally dominate the military forces of the Guomindang after the fierce war against the last warlords, Yan Xishan 闻錫山, and Feng Yuxiang 馮玉祥 in northern China.

Liang was active in politics as a moderate in the early years of the Republic, opposing the early KMT to his left and the dictatorial Yüan Shih-k’ai to his right.
Li happened to be garrison commander at Wuhan when the 1911 Revolution broke out; although not a radical, he was dragged boot-first from under his wife’s bed by rebel soldiers and named the revolutionary commander.
He went on to hold a variety of high offices in the early years of the Republic, including two terms as President (1916-1917 and 1922-1923).

In the National Assembly in Beijing (dominated by the Beiyang militarists), the pro-war camp was led by Premier Duan Qirui (段祺瑞;) while the anti-war camp was led by President Li Yuanhong (黎元洪).
With Yuan's death, Li Yuanhong succeeded as President but most of the military power ended with Duan Qirui.
In response, Li invited Zhang Xun (张勋) to bring his forces to Beijing, which against his expectations, resulted in the short-lived Restoration of the Qing monarchy in the capital.

The Qing forces led by Li Hongzhang and Zen Guofan were trained in the Western way and equipped with Western weapons.
In 1917, conflict between president Li Yuanhong and prime minister Duan Qirui over whether China should participate in World War I led to the mediation of a warlord Zhang Xun who tried to restore imperial rule in China but was ousted in no time.
