Liam Fox - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dr Liam Fox (born September 22, 1961) is a UK Conservative politician, currently Shadow Defence Secretary and Member of Parliament for Woodspring.
Liam Fox has been the MP for Woodspring since 1992, however, he actually resides in Bishop Sutton in the adjacent constituancy of Wansdyke (Dan Norris, Labour), this is due to a boundary change which in effect moved his home from being within his constituency to its current location.
Fox was made co-chairman of the party by Michael Howard when he became party leader in November 2003.

MP Liam Fox: Limit Abortions to 12 Weeks   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Fox says the change in the abortion law is important to reduce the number of abortions and stop those who "kill" unborn children, he said.
Fox's proposal comes after pro-life MP Edward Leigh threatened to come up with a Tory leader from among a group of 25 pro-life members of parliament he works with, including former party leader Iain Duncan Smith.
Fox is thought to have about a dozen supporters for his bid and the backing of the pro-life members aligned with Leigh and Smith would be a huge boost.

The Social Affairs Unit - Web Review: Whatever the final Tory leadership result, Liam Fox has won - says Watlington
It was the emergence of Liam Fox as an authentic claimant to the Thatcher inheritance, as well as a serious proponent of compassionate conservatism.
Fox's persistent and noisy support for Bush and Blair lying us into losing a war is demonstrably unpopular, and could be seen as politically foolish for a party lagging behind already.
Fox's support for market economics was sound, and his speechifying skills are considerable, but his leadership bid is, I suspect, his first and last own goal.

 toryleadership: Liam Fox
Where Liam Fox goes further than David Davis is in his brave willingness to mention a subject like abortion (about which I intend to blog later) and in hinting that fighting poverty isn't just about social mobility.
Liam Fox launched some fireworks this morning after a very quiet August during which time his candidacy has been eclipsed by the rise of David Cameron and Ken Clarke.
Fox wrote: “Tories will not deal with a broken society by abandoning tried-and-tested economic beliefs.” He did not say how those “tried-and-tested” beliefs would be tempered, if at all, in order to protect what remains of the extended family (see "intruderism").

Liam understands that the core beliefs, described above, and which have characterised conservatism since the Thatcher years, are not enough.
Liam’s idea of mending the ‘broken society’ was unfairly characterised as gloomy by yesterday’s FT. But for many people - who can’t afford to read Companies & Markets - life is pretty grim.
Dr Fox's compassionate brand of Conservatism - with its commitment to unconditionally support the people our society has failed like the mentally ill - demonstrates once and for all that we are not the "nasty" party, but are instead dedicated to improving Britain.

DAVID Davis was last night struggling to maintain his position as favourite for the Tory leadership after a lifeless conference speech that saw him upstaged by a flag-waving Liam Fox.
But Dr Fox effectively trumped that hand, telling the conference he was the son of a teacher and a housewife, the grandson of miners and the product of a comprehensive school.
Fox is no longer a fringe right-winger, but a man with a straightforward message.

FOX: I heard Kenneth Clarke this morning saying that the Conservative Party should be looking wider than Europe, at countries such as Australia and New Zealand and Ken will no doubt be delighted to know that that's in fact where I started.
FOX: No, I won't be drawn into a debate because there's no chance of us being in charge of the Health Service, up to that point, that's up to the Government what they spend up to 2005.
FOX: I think there are a lot of attractions in people being willing to look at the systems that they have in other countries, where the level of private spending on top of what the state spends is a lot higher than it is in the United Kingdom.

Fox said there was no link as 9/11 happened in 2001 and Al-Qaida were active before the war in Iraq.
Liam Fox dismissed this by saying that Iraq was the aggressor and that the 'West' liberated Kuwait.
This is a grossly simplified history and their are many other factors behind the Al-Qaida phenomenon, however, right now it does not appear that Liam Fox or the BBC interviewer are capable of grasping them.

Fox is probably the worst of all the candidates, just for his extremely worrying views on the 'war on terror', but the others bar KC aren't much better on this.
Liam Fox may be a good minister but he simply is not Prime Ministerial material. He lacks that special extra something that makes leaders stand out from those who are there to be lead.

A Eurosceptic who is seen as being on the right of the party, Liam Fox is a gregarious and likeable figure with a talent for self-promotion.
First elected to Parliament in 1992, Dr Fox rose quickly through the ranks, becoming a government whip and later a Foreign Office minister when the Conservatives were in power.
Dr Fox was mentioned in the sleeve notes of the debut album of his friend Natalie Imbruglia, sparking rumours of a romance with the ex-Neighbours' star - and he certainly caused a stir in Westminster when he introduced her to friends and colleagues.

The Right Way: Fox there on merit
Speculation Fox benefited from tactical voting seems mainly to come from the fact he gained 19 additional votes, so in a sense it's not a huge suprise, but it's not an analysis that stands up to scrutiny.
Indeed Dr Fox was thought to have about 10 additional members of the Cornerstone group who hadn’t declared for him but that would vote for him, and with many other undeclared MP's being right-wing and/or part of the 2005 intake many had already concluded Fox would pick up a fair share of such MP's anyhow.
The Political betting site, which received a statistically significant 103 first round predictions, had fox with an average of 41 votes; such a figure confirms most punters had expected Fox to get in the early 40's and his final score of 42 was therefore no suprise.

What makes you happy ? » Liam Fox talks utter crap.
A short article in the Independent has this as the headline: Fox: Mental patients’ treatment a disgrace and Liam Fox (who just happens to want to lead the Bunch of Blue) claims that the mentally ill are getting poor treatment.
Dr Fox is sincere in what he says; that you make such inappropriate paralells and put such negative spins on his words (”It’s the aesthetics of the buildings that bothers him isn’t it ?”) tells us very little about him, but informs us a lot about your knee jerk prejudices.
Given that these are deeply unfashionable issues that Dr Fox is talking about, which are unlikely to be ones that win him much support from his peers, and his long established track record working alongside mental health charirities, I don’t think accepting his sincerity is too much to expect.

I notice with interest that Conservative leadership hopeful Liam Fox quotes James C Bennett's Anglosphere Challenge in his Telegraph article.
That Liam Fox should use this quote betrays the fact that in his view other countries, outwith the Anglosphere, do not share these qualities - EU countries for example.
It's telling that Liam Fox has chosen to align himself so publicly with Anglospherists, all of whom believe that the UK should leave the EU, and the majority of whom support Newt Gingrich's proposition that the UK should join NAFTA.
