Telegraph | Sport | Lawrence on the spot
Liam Lawrence readily admits he is flattered to be compared with David Beckham, but the England captain could do much worse than taking a proverbial leaf out the Sunderland midfielder's book when it comes to converting penalties.
Lawrence, who became known as the `David Beckham of Field Mill' during his five years at Mansfield, put the outcome of this game beyond doubt in exemplary fashion with a late penalty after he was felled by Dan Harding.
It was an overdue first goal for Lawrence who struck 22 times (including 12 penalties) last season at Mansfield, although he did miss against Huddersfield in the Division 3 play-off – "the lowest point of my career."
