The Western Herald - CD Review: Liam Lynch -- Fake Songs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Fake Songs, the long, long overdue debut album of media wizard Liam Lynch, is more of an exploration into the mind of a slaphappy genius than merely an album of music.
Lynch wanders around from country music ("Still Wasted From The Party Last Night"), gospel ("Electrician's Day") and good old-fashioned 1980s metal ("Vulture's Son.") Lynch also frequently works to make songs that are direct interpretations of particular artists, such as David Bowie, Depeche Mode, The Pixies and Talking Heads.
Featured on the DVD are examples of Lynch's animation, skits and music videos, along with lengthy behind the scenes views of the recording process.

If the name Liam Lynch already rings a bell, chances are it's because of his short-lived sock-puppet based The Sifl and Olly Show.
While the comedy side of the album falls almost completely flat ("United States of Whatever" is funny in a very MTV sort of way), the pseudo-serious songs come across as slavish homage.
Lynch must have a very healthy ego to think that anyone needs to watch all of the minutiae of his recording process.

Nathan: No. The cd is divided into two parts, each part mixed into the other: the fake songs, and Liam Lynch's actual efforts at music.
The fake songs are imitations of the styles of various famous artists like David Bowie, Bjork, and The Pixies, him trying to make songs that both encapsulate the ouevre of the artist, and sound like a song they could've actually recorded.
Now, if I hadn't seen his process, maybe I would be more impressed with Liam's work, but what he let me see was really just a reflection of myself.
