Liars (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Liars is currently a three-piece band consisting of Australian-born Angus Andrew (vocals/guitar), Aaron Hemphill (percussion, guitar, synth), and Julian Gross (drums).
The first release from Liars as a three-piece was a split EP with the band Oneida, called Atheists, Reconsider (released December 2002).
The band relocated to a cabin in the woods near New Jersey for the recording sessions, and immersed themselves in both non-fiction accounts of witch trials and traditional witch folklore.

 Mute.com: Liars: Biography
A band withdrawing to a basement deep in the wilds somewhere and letting their every little wrinkle of rampant creativity and twisted genius seep deep into the shadows of this most poignant and chilling ghost story.
Liars had negotiated with their label, Mute, that rather than record their second album in a conventional studio, with every spare minute costing them, that they invest in some modest studio gear and record the album in Angus's basement, with good friend Dave Sitek assisting.
The band had already made a conscious decision, even before the tapes began to roll, to move on from the music of their first album, even though a whole clutch of live favourites from their first incarnation, including the pulverising 'Catchy Like Brains On Gangs' remained unrecorded.

Brooklyn based, Liars are Melbourne born Angus Andrew (vocals and pedals), Aaron Hemphill from LA (guitar and drum machine) and Nebraskians Pat Nature (bass and synthbox) and drummer Ron Albertson, who were both previously in seminal mid-west bands Opium Taylor and Mercy Rule, respectively.
Liars are the sound of panic, of hearts beating too fast for comfort, that moment when things fall apart.
Liars returned to London in June to headline the four day Sonic Mook 'Future Rock and Roll’ festival at the ICA over the Jubilee Weekend - critics and public alike are agreed - Liars are one of the most exciting live groups around.

Liars drew praise from critics, cheers from forward thinking fans and became a symbol for technology-related issues with their debut, They Threw Us in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top (2001, Mute).
Loved or hated, there?s no doubt that the band?s blend of punk dynamics and background buzzes were the main reason it drew any attention good or bad: From musical Luddite to early-adopting hipsters, everyone who heard the album got wrapped up in its technological aspects.
In fact, the notion that his band?s been ushered into the arena of a new rock band amuses him.

The track brings to mind the Sonic Youth track "Satan is Boring," and Liars appear to have the same agenda as early Sonic Youth: to balance the primal with the arty, balance violence with fl humor, and find sounds that are modern and mystical.
Liars uncover some godawful scraping that's indeed new, blurring the line between between guitar, percussion, and synth noise.
It shows a band that can tap into something ancient, then stick a digital glitch on top, and have the result more frightening and dislocating than those elements could ever be alone.

Liars: They Threw Us in a Trench and Stuck a Monument On Top (2002): Reviews
Liars have a surprisingly unique approach that distinguishes them from other groups in their willingness to experiment with different tones, volumes, and styles, all of which make They Threw Us in a Trench and Stuck a Monument On an astounding debut.
Liars got the punk wave thing down, but what makes them more interesting than their peers is their willingness to explore beyond the edges of the new-wave box.
Liars are more about energy than solid songwriting, but these spastic, jagged grooves are powerful enough to inspire a sea of awkward punk-rock dances.

Europunk.net - Band Profile: Liars Academy
Liars Academy boasts powerfully crafted rock n roll layered with poignant melodies, irresistible hooks and earnest lyrics - a combination all too rare in "underground" music today.
Liars Academy first showed up on the underground press radar (outside its native Baltimore, that is) with the 2001 debut release, No News Is Good News.
Though it hinted at the band's previous formative work, the EP was clearly Liars Academy's first foray into serious songwriting and the first steps toward a singular identity.

Lying Liars and the Lies They Tell By Philip Sherburne
But the story of Liars' divided reception isn't really about whether the album is any good; it's an object lesson in the risks a band faces in straying from formula at this moment in time—and in the limits of the current critical taste for music with a retro bent.
Whatever Liars' reputed live skills, this is not, as a Strokes album might conceivably be, an album for Friday nights in a dive bar, frugging to the jukebox and chugging Pabst Blue Ribbon.
Or maybe Liars set themselves up for the sacrifice; perhaps adding Metal Machine Music—Lou Reed's famously difficult, widely panned 1975 double LP of squealing guitar feedback—to their résumé was part of the plan.

Clubland and live bands have had next to nothing to say to each other for years, and the general absence of a "New York rock scene" (i.e., a bunch of popular local bands that run in the same circles) has always been a little embarrassing to explain to out-of-town visitors.
I spent years wishing for a generation of local guitar bands that would catch the groove like they did around 1980, and now that scene is finally happening.
Reissues of formerly uncool early-'80s groove bands like A Certain Ratio and Malaria suddenly have cachet, and young New Yorkers are following their example because it's about time the rock underground got something new to dance to again.

Well, the Liars deemed this place worthy of a visit while touring behind the recently-released They Were Wrong, So We Drowned, described by various critics as "unlistenable", "too scary to handle" -- the same critics who once labeled the band "blistering hot".
The band pulled together a bit by the end of the set ("The Lord" and "The Chain" were particularly smooth), but overall, The Young People didn't inspire a trip to their side of the merch booth.
This demonstrated once again that despite the new material's heavy subject matter, the band haven't lost their sense of humor -- nor have they completely sunk into a world of what a guy behind me referred to as "gothy shit".

This story is about a bidding-war band that gets a huge deal with a 20 percent royalty rate and a million-dollar advance.
If all of the million records are sold at full price with no discounts or record clubs, the band earns $2 million in royalties, since their 20 percent royalty works out to $2 a record.
So their profit is $6.6 million; the band may as well be working at a 7-Eleven.

It, along with the rest of the band's just-released CD, Broken Record, is reminiscent of another New York City-based band, Liars.
When the band leans back on a sullen melody, like on the ballady "You Are Red" and the gorgeous 7-minute closer "Thunder and Lightning," there are hints of the empty-street desolation that follows a night of Big Apple partying.
The band shopped the recording to a number of labels, but no one could promise to release it by March.

 Liars Academy: Demons Aversion.com Review
Slowly bands like Jimmy Eat World, Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse are pushing out all the mall-punk nonsense and alt-pop hogwash that’s been the meat and potatoes of rock radio since grunge imploded.
It’s a wise move, as it sheds some of the generic qualities that plagued the band’s early release, instead proffering a mix of air-guitar ready arrangements and humungous vocal hooks.
The band’s songs would make great radio singles — stirring everyone from Matchbox Twenty holdovers to the hipper Jimmy Eat set — but the band’s hooks are never big enough, sharp enough or thrown out with enough power to make them stick.
