AUSTRALIAN PYTHONS PART TWO - THE SMALLER LIASIS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Liasis is a genus confined to Australia, New Guinea and parts of Indonesia.
Some people have postulated that Liasis perthensis be split into two geographical species: the reddish-coloured Western Australian specimens remaining as Liasis perthensis whilst the brownish to olive Northern Territory specimens be named a new species, Liasis inornata.
I know of no Liasis perthensis ever dying in captivity so must assume that they are susceptible to the usual snake ailments (but to an unknown degree).

Assessing Current Australian Python Taxonomy Using Mitochondrial Cytochrome b
The Apodora (Liasis) paupuana on the other hand was in a clade with other Liasis, namely Liasis olivacea, and therefore may not be a distinct genus separate from Liasis.
The species Python timoriensis was in the middle of a large clade of Liasis, suggesting that it may be misnamed, directly descended from a Liasis species or falsely entered in the NCBI database.
This is partially concurrent with a 1975 paper by S.B. McDowall, which suggested that Morelia (Liasis) boeleni was an intermediate between Morelia (Python) amethistina and M.

Burton's snake-lizard, Liasis burtonis, with description and vocabulary from Australian Aboriginal languages named Oykangand, Olkola and Pakanh, spoken in central Cape York Peninsula, north Queensland, Australia.
The nomenclature used by myself will be the same as that used by Cogger (1979) except that I shall call Python oenpelliensis, Liasis oenpelliensis in recognition of the affinity this snake shows in relation to others in the same named genus and for reasons of consistency.
Using this criterion and others given by McDowall (1975) Liasis amethystinus and Liasis oenpelliensis should be classified as Python amethystinus and Python oenpelliensis.

 Kingsnake.com - Herpforum - RE: Python classification
Well, Liasis Gray 1842 is a sort of nasty genus as Gray failed to designate a type species back in 1842.
The genus Liasis introduced by Gray 1842 and in which Peters & Doria placed Liasis albertisii Peters & Doria, 1878 has led to high taxonomic confusion in the past.
Kluge 1993 based on a phylogenetic study figured out that albertisii is quite distinct from Liasis and therefor placed it into the newest available genus for this species and this was Leiopython Hubrecht 1879.

 Olive Python
Here in the Pilbara we do not find the olive python Liasis olivaceus but instead we have the sub species called the Barroni olive Liasis olivaceus barroni.
The most obvious difference at a glance though is that the Barroni olive has 4 posterior prefrontals and an unusual very small scale in between the internasals and in anterior contact with the rostral scale.
The Olive python Liasis olivaceus only has three posterior prefrontals and lacks that small scale found between the internasals as in the Barroni.

Olive Python - Liasis olivaceus Gray 1842.
I agreed with Wells and Wellington (1985) in viewing the name Liasis as being unavailable for this group.
Within Australia these snakes are 'Liasis fuscus' (Water Python) herein referred to as Katrinus fuscus and Liasis olivaceus (Olive Python).
However it is my considered view that the fuscus group (Water Pythons) are sufficiently delineated from the olivaceus group (Olive Pythons), to warrant placement into their own genus.
