DVD Verdict Review - Libeled Lady
With four terrific stars to anchor Libeled Lady, it's difficult to know where to start discussing the acting, but I'm going to start with Myrna Loy for the perfectly subjective reason that, among the four stars, she gets short shrift in the packaging of this movie.
Libeled Lady also makes the unusual and even courageous move to omit a scene that we all sense is coming—the one in which Connie confronts Bill about all the lies he's told her.
Libeled Lady deserves to be recognized as one of the best screwball comedies of the 1930s, and this release should heighten awareness of this wonderful comedy.

From a professional standpoint, Libeled Lady marked a return to the kind of brassy comic leads that had made her a star.
Harlow and her co-stars were helped a great deal by a solid script that took the usual screwball comedy formula and doubled it.
Rather than let them postpone shooting - the casting office was already closed for the night - Harlow put on a fl wig and joined the rest of the extras, a return to the work she had done when she first arrived in Hollywood.

Directed by Jack Conroy, 1936's Libeled Lady is a minor screwball of modest pleasures.
Though the sex comedy is sharp, the plotting isn't sure-footed (thought there's a good set-piece when Powell learns to fish and accidentally hooks Harlow's posterior), and the resolution lacks the precision one hopes for from a genre entry.
