Adult Libellulidae can be readily identified to family by features of the wing venation, but separation of larvae between Corduliidae and Libellulidae can be difficult.
The labial palps in Libellulidae usually are smooth distally, rarely toothed or notched.
In those Libellulidae where the distal edge of the palps become notched, the anal pyramid is long with three long points (epiproct and paraprocts) and two shorter spines (cerci).

 Lab Notes for Odonata
No consistently reliable morphological feature appears to separate larvae of Corduliidae and Libellulidae, and all recent attempts (Walker and Corbet 1975, Westfall 1984, Hilsenhoff 1995, Westfall and Tennessen’s 1996, Needham et al.
Thus, attempts to separate the Corduliidae and Libellulidae are often given with cautionary notes (e.g., Westfall and Tennessen (1996, footnote on p.
You may find it easier with Hilsenhoff (1995) and other keys where no attempt is made to separate these two families.

Although Libellulidae nymphs have the same afterburner system as their Aeshnidae cousins, they are hesitant to use it.

 Anisoptera Families
The similarity in morphology among the larvae of Libellulidae, Corduliidae and Macromiidae has led some to group these as subfamilies in Libellulidae.
Hopefully a thorough morphological, molecular and ecological study of the entire group will one day resolve the matter.
Artificial key (no one character can reliably separate the families Corduliidae and Libellulidae, hence one may have to run through the keys of both families to reliably identify a specimen to genus):
