 Liberal Vs Conservative
Liberals and conservatives choose their views simply to have opposing views, usually in some vague but unsuccessful attempt to create a common denominator that does not exist.
Liberals worry about the rich mistreating the poor, wealthy capitalists mistreating the environment, majorities mistreating minorities, bosses mistreating employees, unelected officials applying the law unfairly, etc. Conservatives worry about all manner of traditional concerns: foreign enemies, financial insolvency, bad manners among the youth, crime, the decline of traditional values, rituals, and religion, etc.
Adding further to the confusion is the fact that most conservatives in the United States today also call themselves "classical liberals": that is, exponents of Lockean enlightenment values such as reason, liberty, and free trade.

Liberal vs. Conservative from a Free Market/Freedom Perspective
While one can change which party controls the state, whether a nominal liberal or conservative leads it, one cannot change the policies of the state.
If someone tries to tell you that they are a liberal or conservative, or that someone else is, you should evaluate where they stand on the free market and freedom versus the state and state interventionism.
The neo-liberals and neo-conservatives who dominate both the Democratic and Republican parties endorse the exact same policies.

 DaveShearon: Liberal/Conservative
One thing seems to be that liberals are more uncomfortable than conservatives with politicians or voters who take their faith seriously (with the exception of anti-war guilt and angst).
Conservatives seem to be testing whether government resources can be channeled through faith-based efforts without invoking the negatives of government programs, but even here there are conservatives who oppose even this much involvement with government power.
Conservatives, on the other hand, inherently distrust suggestions to use the government's monopoly on lethal force to "do good." This goes beyond "unintended consequences"; it positively views the exercise of governmental power as creating inustice and unfairness, and as inherently incapable of doing otherwise.

Conservative and liberal aren't really opposites here the way they are in America.
I'm slightly involved with the Conservative party, which in Canada has a populist, decentralist, fiscally and socially conservative type of feel to it.
